11 is borderline old enough to know better, but I probably would have just spent the money.

I mean I spent it on little extras for the kid during lunch and at the gift shop, but because I didn't get the kid a banana he expected I'm a cheapskate a-hole piece of shite.

I remember my parents would give me money for field trips and I wouldn’t spend shite so I could pocket the money and use it to buy a video game I wanted when I got home because I didn’t give a damn about the field trip other than the fact it kept me out of class for the day

Kid is probably 11

You better hope this kid doesn't grow up to be your nursing home attendant, is all I'm saying. Your face will forever be burned in his mind anytime the word "Douchebag" comes up

You might want to up your 11 year old field trip snack game. I mean they are wholesome snacks, but what 11 year old wants to snack on celery or sweet peppers at the zoo? A pack of gushers or Cheez its probably would have solved the whole problem.

As for your question, I would have bought the kid a frozen banana. I dont like to see kids go without, I believe in generosity and I'm not a tightass that freaks over the cost of a frozen banana. I also wouldn't have taken pride in lecturing someone else's kid over money.

But you do you, with your bag of produce on a field trip.

I'd probably not buy my kids treats other kids don't have the same unlimited access to. Yes he had 20 bucks, your kids had your Visa. It's awkward that he asked for sure. I coached a 6 year old baseball team and often had a few kids who would ask for concessions when I got my son stuff. I quit buying my son stuff in front of the team.

I disagree here. I think it’s good for kids who come from little money to see this and deal with it. Not exposing them to this reality is why you get idiots that are entitled when they reach adulthood and vote to make everyone “equal”

I was the kid who came from little money. I had friends who parents bought them everything they wanted. I wanted those things but could not have them. Know what I did? Got a summer job so I could buy them myself. Later in life I’m more successful than many of those I grew up with who were given everything

Yeah...I was going more for a teachable moment about fiscal responsibility and delayed gratification, but instead taught the lesson of "guys who don't immediately give in to my whims are assholes."

You kinda are for treating an 11 year old kid like a grown adult. I bet the kid was embarrassed as hell to have you lecturing him in front of everybody over a frozen banana.

Then she gave him 3 back so he still had some cash for the gift shop.

I'm pretty sure she gave the 3 back because she felt bad for what you putting the kid through.

Because she was with our little mini-group. And she had seen me explain to him that if he wanted extras, he was going to have to spend the money he was sent with. And then she was checking out with her kid and he just set his stuff up there with hers and she didn't know how to react.

Still not your business at that point. Not your kid. You said "no". Leave it at that and don't try to manage another grownup's money. That's her business at that point.

Cmon man, nobody is saying you should have got the kid whatever he wanted. And quit being passive aggressive with your "I should have splurged" comment.

Most of us are saying we would have bought 1 frozen banana for an 11 year old child and not expected anything in return.

My kids picked the snacks out. There was some chocolate stuff too but that never made it past the bus ride. Fruits and veggies are natures snack and a bunch of kids enjoyed them. I didn't have much left at the end. The sweet peppers and Celery ended up being an unexpected hit

I must have communicated this poorly. It was never about the Banana. I could have bought 10 bananas.
It's about how you ask for things, especially lagniappe. Especially when you've made it clear you were given money for that purpose.

1. I didn't lecture him in front of everyone. I quietly explained to him that he was welcome to get a banana. Or any other extra snack he wanted with his extra money. And if he wanted to save his money for the gift shop that was fine too.

2. Eh, maybe I could have just let the other mom learn her lesson. The lesson was lost on the kid. I don't know his situation.
