How was it getting used to switching. I've been look at other fields outside of Oil/gas/chemical. Salaries look to be smaller but maybe haven't found the right one yet.

BR is fine as a college student or young adult. I think many issues come in when you start a family. That's when I start to hear more and more people talk about moving.
I'd rather live in BR than the BR suburbs as well, but that isn't something I will do with a child. So the option is moving.
Will likely happen in the next year or two if things work out. What keeps us here now is good jobs and family and the fact that my kids is still an infant so schooling doesn't matter.
Aside from bad public schools, what makes BR a bad place to raise a child? Assuming you live in a good area, of course.
For the record, I don't disagree with you. People start families in BR and then move. I believe most of them move because of a failure of a public school system.
I'd love to hear people's thoughts on how to fix EBR's school system.. I don't know a thing about it but it's interesting to me, particularly because of the racial divide in EBR along Florida. Perhaps SG would help fix the school problems, or perhaps not...

I think schooling is the main thing. Paying taxes to support the public schools and then paying thousands to send your child to a private school where they aren't necessarily getting a better education. Think how much better the city could be if the money spent on private school education went back into the community. People could eat out more, shop more, etc.
In general I find the wages here to be low with a cost of living that isn't all that cheap. But I know that isn't true for all industries.
The best way I can think to fix the schools is people need to start sending their kids to public schools and over time they would get better. But who is going to want to be the first to do that? I know I don't.

Agree wholeheartedly.
My wife and I have been talking about it lately.. She's a product of the EBR public school system, and life's turned out very well for her. So far, our thoughts are to be as involved as we can be with education and learning and allow the EBR system to fail us before we go elsewhere. If we just send a kid to private school then we are just another part of the problem (or so that's our logic). Once the actual decision time comes years down the road, though, that could all change. Who knows

It was great I got lucky and got even money when I switched. But way more opportunity to move up here.
Also I left a Norwegian company and now am in an American company. So the culture switch was a breath of fresh air.
Europeans suck at holding their employees accountable.

Same here. Bought a duplex 2 years ago on Capital Heights and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I really like the direction the area is heading in

We live in the same area and we love it too. Unfortunately for us we are small business owners and doing business with the city parish and state have become so burdensome we are looking to relocate before spring of 2019. I guess it's really the state government more so than our local city parish government. The state has created an environment for small business owners where they can not be trusted to act logically. Your experience depends entirely on who you're speaking with that day. Laws and regulation do not apply. A good example is this year we got dinged with a onsite workers comp audit for the 2016 tax year. The auditor made this unnecessarily burdensome by scheduling visits multiple visits (5) and not showing up. The final straw was her taking my original tax documentation to her office despite this being an on site audit and then vanishing for 3 full months. I ended up owing about $6 but easily wasted 20 hours of my own personal time between waiting for scheduled appointments and trying to tract down my documentation after the auditor taking it with her.

The EBR public school system cannot be fixed. It is running exactly how many of the citizens, board members, administrators and teachers want it to run, namely for their own benefit rather than for the education of children. And the population and powers with that destructive agenda are gaining in numbers and political power daily.
If not for family obligations, we’d be gone already. And as soon as those obligations are no longer, we’re out and won’t ever look back.

Denham, Prairieville wouldn't be considered suburbs? They're part of the BR metro area. I'd go as far as considering Walker and Gonzales as BR suburbs, too. Since all of the unincorporated areas are not part of BR proper, I suppose they'd be considered suburbs too, although in my mind they're in BR.

quote:I guess so. In my experience (when moving out of Baton Rouge), most suburbs have public transportation, metro type train stations that lead to the main city, multiple towns (50 or more) and townships with their own little 'downtown' areas and main streets, etc. Also how the infrastructure and streets are set up in block style, numbered streets, stuff like that.

I think it's more due to population though, since in DuPage county where I am, is like 5x the population of Baton Rouge.
I just remember moving up here and going "Oh, so this is what suburbs are"
