AMC and Regal are already banning Universal because they released the new trolls movie via streaming. Best I can tell they've pulled in just over 2 million at the box and around 100 online (budget was 90-95). Studios know they can make money selling 2 day rentals at $20 without theaters.

There's going to be a shitstorm. The major chains have already blackballed Universal due to Trolls going Direct-to-PPV... and Universal boasting about it being a hit. You think they're going to want people to wear masks which will essentially kill their main source of profit (concessions)?
I think we'll see a reduction of releases/more screens showing movies/ social distancing put in place. Honestly you really shouldn't be concerned now if you weren't before. With stadium seating you've already had a shower of droplets from the person sitting behind you.

Every now and then going to a late night movie on week night is fun. We went see Joker at like 10 on a Wednesday when we were both off the next day. Place was empty

I suspect Fallguy's right. Bankruptcies, acquisition, and consolidation. No matter what people say, there is no replacing a theater screen and sound system at home and there will still be a market for people who want to watch a movie like the Top Gun sequel in a theater. I just don't think we'll still have 3 or 4 theaters in a city anymore to pick from.

Heck - I wouldn’t be shocked to see actual major theatres start dabbling more during off days/hours. A couple big showings in major major markets and then to premium streaming options (maybe even see tiered out options for Netflix with major new releases being at a higher subscription or ala cart cost)
