West Berlin was pretty cool in the mid to late 80's....it had its weird spots and the feel could be Bohemian. I remember that the locals did not think much about the Wall......they had gotten used to it. Good bars there back then

Once inside West Berlin it was just the same as say Paris or London. More frenetic.

We stayed in the CSU/CDU guest house not very far from the Brandenberg Gate.
We got to know some locals. One woman I remember talked about her family who were on the other side of the wall. When it first went up they could talk across the wall. Then the wall got serious and she hadn't seen her Mutti in three years.
It was summer and the Berliner Weisser beer was interesting and very local.
One very late night, local whores had come to the local bar after their 'night'. Most were offspring of US army who stood out from the locals because of their skin color. They were very vocal about how bad their lives were and that they had no options for work.
Tiger Bill's Batman was a hit and you heard it whistled on both sides of the wall.
There was still a subway that went between east and west but it was NOT for tourists, it was only for those citizens who had gov't approval to work in a sector other than where they lived.

FIL was there while in the Army. He was involved in integrating defectors from East Berlin.

Was there in the 80's as a kid. We were stationed in West Germany and would take the "troop train" out of Frankfurt to Berlin. It left and traveled at night and we supposedly weren't supposed to open the curtains when we got to East Germany. The USAF base was at Templehof, which is still the most amazing building I've ever witnessed. Im sure there were other branches posted but don't remember those posts.
We were allowed to go across checkpoint Charlie into East Berlin for tours. We were allowed to see various museums and such and were allowed to go shopping in East Berlin. Stuff was really cheap price wise. Some buildings were marked with a red block and those were buildings we were not allowed to take pictures of.
One of my great memories as a kid. Was dragged all over the world every 2 years but feel lucky to have been able to visit Berlin at that time.

So obviously Germany itself was divided, as well Berlin. But Berlin wasn’t on the border. It was deep into east Germany.

From what I understand, West Berlin stayed relatively “free” much like west Germany was. While East Berlin mimicked East Germany as a closed off communist hell hole.

I think there was a dedicate Highway for people in and out of West Berlin back to west Germany right? Did people flee West Berlin to not be surrounded by East Germany effectively? Seems pretty risky basically assuming the Soviet’s wouldn’t swallow it up although I guess they never did.

I guess in my head it just seems like a pretty crazy logistic situation to live in a western enclave surrounded by USSR territory.

They were relatively free but landlocked so don't think you were ever leaving home without your frickin papers bruh.

The Third Msn is situated in Vienna, not Berlin.

The partitioned sectors of the new Berlin cut across subway lines so you could take a subway in West Berlin, enter into the East but the subway stations there were shut off and you’d exit some place else in the West. There were East German armed guards underground at the points were the subway crossed.
