What was the toy car called that used the equivalent of a plastic rack gear on a strap?

I was digging through an old box of stuff and found my old motorcycle toy. It had a plastic strap with continuous gear teeth that you would thread on the front wheel shaft, which also had gear teeth. You would pull the strap to make the wheel spin and release it.

Lots of ripcord cars. Smash Up Derby was probably the most common.

That’s right, I knew it was something like that. I loved those things. I had the smash up derby ones too.

I think Smash Up Derby was a subset of the Kenner SSP cars.

This one was my favorite as a kid.

Well, "SSP Racers" but yeah, that was them. I had a "Two Much” model that was purple. Loved that thing! It would flat out fly - especially when Dad pulled the zipcord on it!

I was trying to remember what happened to mine and I just now remembered. I got it revved up and put it next to my sister’s head so she could hear it whine. Her hair got caught up in the spinning wheel and she rightfully had a fit! Needless to say, the toy was gone within minutes, never to be seen again.

Yeah, that was only like. . . fifty-one years ago.

You boys have fun with your toys. My toys are fine women, expensive booze and the internet. To each his own.

I had a couple of SSP cars, one was a dark metallic green dragster that I loved. While I loved them my mother HATED them not only was I constantly running them into furniture legs and other stuff around the house took serious pride in her wood floors and those cars were not the best thing for them. I honestly don't know why I was allowed to play with them inside.

I just finished breakfast, the wife brought some Carolina country ham back from her trip. I appreciate the sentiment though, Dominus Vobiscum.
