Mogadishu, Somalia. The only place I have been that I would actually label hell on earth and I have been in and out of some really shitty places but Mogadishu is the worst.

there are about 10-15 sub-saharan african nations that have gone through similar civil wars who could compete

Rwanda, Somaila, Congo, CAR, etc

I've been to Andrews, TX and a lot of those other places similar to it in that region. I always wondered what led people to settle out there. The only logical reason I could come up with was the settlers were headed for someplace further west and just couldn't travel any farther.
