Our neighborhood was awesome. Some of Bossier Parish's current politicians felt my dirt clods in the face.

I grew up in a country Neighborhood. We all had guns by the time we were 11, most of the other kids had suzukis and yamaha motorcycles, one had a honda. My Dad wouldn't let me have a motorcycle, but I had a WW2 surplus willys jeep. It was green with pink polka dots. It was better, you could put more girls in it.

We had an inground pool, unfortunately no diving board, and friends were over almost everyday during the summer.

live ordinance

Dad was stationed at Kaneohe MCAS in Hawaii. While the men were in Vietnam, we were less stringently supervised. So, we went in the woods scrounging. We found some ordinance in those woods - much of which was live. We strapped some on non-powered go carts. An MP with demolition experience saw us pushing a cart up hill and saw the "decor." The Marines gathered up all our ordinance.

I found a jawless human skull on the beach.

Molokini used to be on a gunnery range, I've picked up quite a few handfuls of spent ordinance while snorkeling there

Growing up, it was first the XR75, and soon to be supplanted a few years later by the infamous YZ80

I had the GT80. Not as cool as the YZ...but I could drive at night...so there was that.

The area between the officer's quarters and the runway at Kaneohe had koa bushes (big to kids, not so big to adults). There had obviously been either a dump of ordinance there or it was a range at one period of time (there was a ton of brass, including a lot of blanks).

I think the live rounds were likely old mortar rounds.

you mention being less stringently supervised during the VN war, when I was a kid I worked on Barksdale AFB almost every summer and during school breaks during that time, we had jobs in the weapons storage area and the alert area, we would just have free range of everything, we could have loaded up trucks of bombs and rockets every day but after the war ended, and the base got a new commander, the security really tightened up, everyone working in those areas had to have a background check, a base ID, and had to be pre-announced before arriving at the worksite, and they were deadly serious about enforcement
