Do you not see the people you work with day in and day out?

Hunting/water skiing/fishing before and after school was definitely a plus.

Yep, pretty much.

ETA: The wife and I will be moving back in 10 years or so.. We're inheriting a large farm, 500+ acres. My father in law wants to keep it in the family, so we're starting an orchard/hunting club on it.

Midland Michigan... about 35,000 people with Dow Chemicals headquarters as the main employer... nice town back then with almost zero crime... kids could walk the streets without fear of anything... people are kind of bland though.....

Small town:
Fishing, hunting, generally just wandering around in the woods
Hanging out by convenience stores to get liquor
Drinking all the time cause there's nothing else to do
Everyone knows everyone
Only going to town to go to the movies or LSU football games
Bonfires or pools are the main kinds of parties
Eating out was very rare
You couldn't walk to much because everything was so spread out
Regular yard work and maintenance would take the entire family full weekends to complete

I love my small town, people know you , you know them. when I did something dumb, the cops brought me to my parents , because that's was far worse than going to jail. Big town? A 5 year old gets officially charged . Traffic? Heck, 5 mins to get anywhere.

One day when I don't have to work , I'll move back. Until then, Houston it is! Haha

I grew up in a town of about 1,100 people in 8 square miles. It wasn't too bad. Larger cities 30 minutes away, good employment opportunities if you had technical skills, beautiful river property.. All in all, as much as I bitched while I was there, it was actually a nice place. But then again, I enjoy the laid back way of life.

Grew up in the back part of white castle. We rode bikes everywhere and the yards were big enough to play any sport you wanted to. School didn't have a/c until i was in third grade. This was in the 80s and very early 90s. No movie theater or nice restaurants

I enjoyed that aspect though, it meant everyone always cooked, so you got to enjoy styles of cooking you weren't normally exposed to. It also made going out to eat more of a treat than a normal occurrence. As for the movie theater, my friend's parents were quite wealthy, they had a theater room with motorized leather recliners.

Everyone knows everyone. High school football games mean a lot more in small towns than in bigger cities even if the teams aren't as good. Bonfires and barn parties were just about a once a week occurrence.

The pickings were slim, so you'd either date someone your friend did and risk pissing him off or go hang out in surrounding towns for new catches.

ETA: My experience, as an above average guy, you definitely stood out more, so I had the luxury of dating almost anyone in school. Quite honestly, that lost its luster, so I concentrated on the "older" girls.
