What to do with old license plate?

My truck was totalled and I signed it over to the insurance company. I got my license plate, and I'm not exactly sure what I'm supposed to do with it.
Am I supposed to turn it into the dmv? Never sold a vehicle before so I'm ignorant.

Yes you have to turn it in to the DMV, or you will be fined

Go change it out with some random car in a store parking lot. Call in your license plate as being stolen.
