What sort of stuff would you take your kid out of school for? (Temporarily)

Would you ever take them out and basically call them in "sick" for a family trip, or a funeral, wedding, family reunion? A hunting/fishing trip? I'm talking for the space of up to a week, no longer.

Do you really think taking them out of the classroom for a few days will hurt their learning more than the experience they'd gain from the trip?

Especially in this day of having the wealth of all human knowledge at their fingertips and email and internet access to assignments, is there really any harm in removing them from their little indoctrination centers for a while in order to get some extracurricular experience?

Why should they be confined to the holidays school has for them?

I'm sure there are arguments for both sides.

What does the OT think?

A week is a lot of catch up work

And if your kid is dumb, they may actually need the teacher's instruction

I'm not saying it would be a whole week. Could be a day, or two or three.

And why couldn't the teacher just email the work home?

Depends on the age of your kid and the classes they're taking. Making up a week's worth of work in an AP class in middle/high would be a pain in the arse for the kid I'm sure.

Our district allows for up to 10 days for an Educational Enhancement Opportunity. You have to complete the paperwork and show that the trip will be educational.

You laugh, but it's a free feeding+daycare center for more than a few people. Especially the public schools some places.

When I was in 7th grade my parents took me out of school on a Thursday and Friday for Jazz Fest. My whole family was in town and we went the whole weekend. It was awesome and it's a great memory. Those were the days that I didn't mind crowds and heat.

I used to teach. It really is. If a kid truly wants to learn they can teach themselves with less distraction than a classroom can if they are dedicated.

There are Internet sites and videos for damn near everything.

Some teacher's busywork on The Island of the Blue Dolphins isn't really going to teach them anything. But a 5 day trip camping in the mountains? They'd learn something from that. A tangible, teachable experience.

As a teacher, I can say with certainty that trips and experiences trump classroom learning. A child who travels has 10 times the vocabulary of one who does not. However, talk woth your child's teacher in advance and make plans to complete work that will be missed.

I have had no problems in the past letting them stay out for some sort of family event, a hunting trip ,or to play ball out of town.

Several of my daughters High School teammates actually just had their abscences excused for a week while they were in California to play in nationals. (Travel not school ball).

Also, told them that they could stay out the day after 1/9/12.

My mother was a teacher when I was an adolescent. If I missed class to go out of town for an extended period of time. She would always ask my teachers for extra work for me to do on my vacation. Sometimes my mom would even make me write a report or journal on what I experienced on my vacation [To give to me teachers]. Many times my teachers would count that assignment as extra credit for what i missed during class.

One day in 2nd grade, my mom just had an eff it moment and let me sleep in. When I woke up, she took me to Celebration Station. It was pretty much the best day ever and I love that memory. It was towards the end of the school year so I'm sure I didn't miss much. As long as my kids are good kids with excellent grades, I would love to do the equivalent for them simply to have the great memory. I'm not sure I would do a whole week as they got older - I think the makeup work would be too stressful.
