A book of course. How many people even make money from their paintings while they're still alive?

Considering it would probably take a year or 2 to write a great novel and a few weeks or possibly a month to throw together a portrait--I'm going with the art.

Book for fricking sure. Any idiot can make a renowned painting, so long as pompous idiots will buy it. A book, though, that can be endlessly produced in truly insight minds the way a painting never could. Yes paintings can be great, but I don't think the most important painting has been more influential than any of the top 100 most influential books. I'd rather make a great film than paint a great painting as well.

far as legacy goes, more people recognize the greatest paintings of all time than even know the books.

But how influential are they really? Do nations rise and fall on paintings? I don't think so. The only painting that has an argument is the Last Supper. It is clearly highly influential and changed world history. That's the only painting I think has true power within itself. Many books contain a power though to change the world. Can't say the same of really any other painting besides the one I mentioned.

The greatest personal achievement I can have is to be the best husband and father for my family. After that, everything else is lagniappe.

Book, and this reminds me of a joke:

Guy runs into an old classmate at a reunion. His friend, who never left their hometown asks what he's been up to. Humbly, he tells him about going to Harvard, becoming a web mogul and the hit band he played with after graduating. "Wow, I totally missed that, man" responds the friend. "What else ya been doin?"

Again, humbly, he tells him about the subsequent world tour, book deal, F1 stint, model wife, kids and general philantropy. Friend responds: "what an incredible life, dude, I'm so suprised - what have you been up to recently?!!?"

"Well", he says, "earlier this week I was playing Somewhere Over the Rainbow at this shitty bar and totally fricked it up". Friend laughs "oh, yeah...I heard about that one."

I would rather write a series of children's books at the 7th grade reading level about a boy wizard.

quote:

J.K. Rowling Net Worth of $1 billion

The author:

It's been estimated all of Shakespeare's works have earned 4 billion...He died in 1616.

The artist:

quote:

Gerhard Richter, the German painter, has become the most valuable living artist in Europe after his abstract work sold for £30.4 million at auction.

I see your point and it depends on what you value as far as influence. I still think the value of an artistic masterpiece shouldn't be understated. Compelling tangible societal change is only one way of valuing something.

Not to nitpick but I think on a lot of those you're exaggerating the role the book played as opposed to what the important person behind it went to do. Like mein kampf. . communist manifesto is a great example though.
