Yep. I work for DoL so I hear from both sides of this. The overwhelming support cone from people who feel insulated. It's easy to advocate for things that don't adversely affect you.

if we operated with a balanced budget this argument would be iron clad, but we do not. There will likely be cuts, like to teachers and state employees on that level, but I think major cuts to government expenses are going to lag way behind what the private sector is going to be feeling.

The loudest criticism directed towards those "being selfish" and telling people "to stay home!" NEVER,NEVER say ONE THING reassuring about opening the ecomony back. We can be concerned about the virus without bankrupting people, and this country if some people have their way.

3000/month after taxes is a frickload more than what actual lower income families bring in. And that's if only one person in the family is currently out of work.
Lower income families are getting a raise if they lose their jobs.

Ours is using emergency funds from the fed to fund gaps in the budget. Now the State does have a hiring freeze but that was related to falling oil prices.

Yep. I've found great irony in a proggy teacher friend of mine on social media who will shutdown any male who wants to "restrict a woman's body" because it doesn't affect them. She's been collecting a check, but also shaming those who are "going out and violating the order"

I understand what you’re driving at, but there’s still a tipping point, even for people racking up insurmountable debt. Now, if the goal is to sink the economies worldwide and create a new order once the dust settles, then maybe I can see the rational in that benefitting a new power base that stands to benefit from it all.

Exactly.
What I believe is that some folks are choosing to listen to only one argument regarding the virus (the medical one) and that overrides reason and logic. The solution is much more nuanced than that.
Multiple factors have to be taken into consideration and the economy has to be one of those, like it or not. We simply cannot grind the survival engine of our society to a near total halt without long-lasting consequences.
It's similar to the old Friedman/Keynes economic argument. Keynes advocates that the economic pie stays a constant size and that for you to get a bigger slice, someone else must lose part of theirs. Friedman advocates that the pie itself grows bigger to accommodate folks getting a bigger slice. Folks screaming for "Stay home, wait on government" think it's a zero sum game; the truth is that it isn't.

I don't want this government handout I'm forced to take. Yes, I can make it on that. But I have a good job that paid me a decent wage and has provided for me and my family for the past 17 years. I pray to God that it will return to "the good old days" before this bullshite came around. I would much rather have my consistent paycheck than depend on the government to help me out.

Early on I was in the stay at home crowd. After getting furloughed in week 2 and seeing so many people unemployed it’s without a doubt we should open up ASAP with obvious precautions of social distancing, washing hands, etc...Even for people who have stable jobs right now, they should clearly see the need for everyone to get back to work.

Ive seen a couple of ads with millionaire pro athletes telling people to stay home - all 100% still receiving paychecks. It makes me want to throw a shoe at my TV.
