At 12 I was put in a dention center for a month and as soon as I was out...I was back at it doing my own thing.
Sounds like things went great with your way of doing things

I’m going to assume the child snuck out.
Or its the worst parenting ever.
At 13 on a school night we had to be HOME and inside before it got dark til it was time to leave for school the next day/

I think I saw on FB that the kid lived with grandparents and snuck out after they went to bed.

so just let them be shite heads and end up in detention centers when they are 12? Sounds like it worked out great for you.
Actually, yes. I was building major airplane structures for Boeing by 22. Compare that to the coddles in mommas basement we have everywhere now doing jack squat.
I was detained for truancy at 12 because I was independent and self sufficient. Now days 12 year Olds are lucky if they can do much of anything

Any parent whose kid isn’t in school at 12 years old and is put in juvenile detention center is a failure of a parent. I don’t care if it’s home school, but you shouldn’t get to decide you don’t need an education at 12. Maybe you got lucky, but that’s some really awful parenting. I’ve raised 3 really good successful boys. Not being a perfect parent, but definitely education was emphasized.

I don't disagree with you, but not all kids are going to do as they are told regardless of what you do.
I wasn't out committing crimes I just didn't like school and would rather be outdoors. My second son is the same way but thankfully has me to steer him a tad bit.
Lots or teens nowadays are on the honor roll but can't use a screwdriver. They have zero practical skills.

A shift worker?
Prob the kid snuck out like most everyone did at that age.

When I was 11 I use to leave my house at 4:30 AM Sunday mornings to go throw a paper route.

Define self sufficient. You had a job and paid your own bills? Or knew how to dress and feed yourself?

More than likely he snuck out.
Serious question. Would a bike helmet have saved him? I would think it would have fell off at impact? You can't go wrong wearing one, but since they mentioned he wasn't wearing a helmet..

I'm not a helicopter parent. but I know damn well my 13 and 11 year old aren't sneaking out of the house late at night to go be dumbasses, and any parent who knows their 12 year old kid does this and does nothing about it is a shitty parent.
Awhile back my mom told me and my siblings that I was the worst of the three. I told her that was based on what she knew I did, because I did shite she would have never thought I would do, but if I remember correctly, the worst kids where those whose parents didn't let them do anything and was completely oblivious to what they kids were doing when they were able to get away from their parents.

I'm pretty sure the big deal is that the kid is DEAD.

From a quick glance on Google Streetview, I don’t know if I’d even ride my bike in daylight on that road. Just a really bad idea to be there at night.

I would even venture to say that simply the fact that your 12 year old is sneaking out would lead me to believe you're a shitty parent regardless if you knew they were or not.
Same. My kids would never even think of this. They know right from wrong, and respect rules, but I never had to specifically tell them not to leave the house without permission...in the middle of the night...riding a bike...on a dark highway with traffic. I share some of these tragic stories with them so they know bad things can easily happen and they are not immortal or invincible. Like the boy who jumped off the boat on senior trip, drunk driving accidents, etc. Some things are also just common sense.

Maybe it’s a difference in era but in the 90’s I snuck out with my neighbor living in Baton Rouge late at night and we rode our bikes from time to time. Had great parents. Just lifted the window and went and they never knew until years later when I told them. I have a daughter now and would be pissed but it’s a little far to say if a kids sneaks out it means terrible parents.

Some of my students are the same age and are carjacking people at gunpoint at 1am

It depends. It definitely could be the difference maker in certain situations.
We never wore them though. We always rode defensively and moved to the other side of the road or off of the road if a car was coming. We also didn’t have to worry about people playing on their phones back then.
