A guy last week came into the restaurant I work at and ordered a Ramos fizz and told me it was Huey P Long's favorite drink...

Part of Louisiana was once the West Florida Republic with it's own capital in what is now St. Francisville. For about 90 days.

I made a few at home this weekend. Some folks are put off by the raw egg white in it, but I've never gotten sick off of one yet.

Just read one recipe saying you can sub out powdered egg (WTF?) for the egg white, though I would prefer it in classic form. Gotta try this.

ETA: Our token downvoter still runs rampid... Although I must admit, I am from Texas and agreed with his sentiments at first, this is just getting sad.

Just FYI - if you're planning on making them yourself, Martin Wine Cellar off of Essen sells orange flower water.

Edit: NVM if you're in TX.

Course some of the most humorous revolve around Huey & LSU football. My two favorites:
* intimidated the railroad into a $6 round trip fare to a UT game to take the entire LSU student body - ya know how many rail bridges in da state of La - how bout we send ya a bill fo dere construction & maintenance?
* UT playing in BR on a state guarantee - ticket sales were low early in the week & his staff figures our Barnum & Bailey circus is in town Sat night - another phone call "encouraging" them to reschedule was denied, where upon da Gov explains dat dere is a "dipping" law in La - all foreign animals crossin' da state line have ta be dipped fo disease - ya eva dip a lion or elephant? Da circus went to NOLA Sat night

There was an armed revolution that installed a new Governor during Reconstruction in 1872. 5000 ex-Confederate officers and soldiers overthrew the then Republican government and installed someone a little more to their liking.

According to Wikipedia:

quote:

The Battle of Liberty Place was an attempted insurrection by the Crescent City White League against the legal Reconstruction state government on September 14, 1874 in New Orleans, Louisiana, where it was then based. Five thousand members of the Democratic paramilitary White League, made up of Confederate veterans, fought against the outnumbered Metropolitan Police and state militia. The insurgents held the state house, armory and downtown for three days, retreating before arrival of federal troops that restored the elected government.

quote:

The paramilitary White League entered the city with 5,000 forces to seat McEnery; they fought against 3500 police and state militia for control. The White League defeated the state militia, inflicting about 100 casualties. The insurgents occupied the state house and armory for three days, and turned out Governor Kellogg. When former Confederate general James Longstreet tried to stop the fighting, he was pulled from his horse, shot by a spent bullet, and taken prisoner by the White League. Kellogg wired for federal troops and, within three days, President Ulysses S. Grant sent Federal troops there. The White League insurgents retreated from New Orleans before the federal troops arrived, and no one was prosecuted.

Ironically the carpetbagger side was lead by none other than Confederate General Longstreet. There are a number of quotes from his former soldiers saying they had great difficulty not trying to kill him during the battle.

The Battle of Liberty Place

A monument dedicated to those who died is now erected next to the Aquarium behind the Westin in New Orleans. The city council tried to have it destroyed/hidden a number of times.

My grandpa remembers having blackouts on Grand Isle because there was German subs right off the coast

German U-Boats were spotted as far up the River as Plaquemine Point south of Baton Rouge. The Civil Air Patrol pilots were ordered to not discuss the discovery. Guess not to cause panic. I initially heard about this from the pilot interviewed in the 2011 story below:

"In the South, Trent Lane with the Louisiana Wing’s Baton Rouge squadron also served his country through CAP at Coastal Patrol Base 9. Operating from a makeshift base on Grand Isle, the base’s assignment was to patrol along the shores of the Gulf between Grand Isle and the mouth of the Mississippi River.

While Lane said most flights in the base’s tiny yellow Stinson were made memorable by a dazzling array of birds and marine life, on one trip a CAP observer noticed something in the river near Plaquemine, La. The pilot circled overhead several times until the crew was satisfied they were seeing a German U-boat.
They radioed in the position to Baton Rouge, though in the end the sighting was never confirmed by the War Department."

Trent Lane was still flying his airplane at the age of 100. He passed away in 2012.
