Well he did act like a social justice warrior for sinners during his time. Being labeled a sinner in the Jewish community of 1st century Palestine often meant shame for your family and your ability to support your family. Its not like today where among Christians everyone is a "sinner" but we ask God's forgiveness and move on. His message that sin could be forgiven and to love your enemy was radical for its time. That is why the Sanhedrin wanted him dead.
Trying to label Jesus a liberal or a conservative with today's meaning of the terms is silly in my opinion. He certainly cared for the downtrodden of his society but I dont think that is exclusive to either conservative or liberal ideology(although liberals often like to promote that notion). I'll say he he would probably be an independent thinker

I think it's important to understand and discern that Jesus asked us to give to the poor, to those in need. He didn't say the government should do this. He also said "teach a man to fish and he'll eat for the rest of his life." To me, Jesus was about a person standing up for themselves, giving of themselves, and not depending on government to do it for them. I think He would be pretty disgusted with the reliance on government for our needs. And we all know how he felt about tax collectors and the collection of taxes from the people. Sound like a liberal to you?

I hear libs say this a lot and they usually point out that Jesus advocated giving your money to the poor and not judging people, etc. I'm not religious so it doesn't bother me, but I was just curious what you guys think of that claim because usually they say it on Facebook or blogs and stuff where no one really argues with them. I bring this to the OT instead of the poli board bc there's better discussion here

I would walk away and laugh IRL, but I will answer since that is the purpose of this thread.
1. Thou shall not steal
2. Point out that government assistance is usually the most ineffective means of helping the poor.
3. Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.

Thank for the laugh. I needed that this morning. But just so you know, that quote is not from Jesus, nor is it even from the bible.

Nah, Jesus was a staunch supporter of Reagan and the 2nd Amendment.

Well, he did feed multitudes for FREE … when he could've charged $8.99 for a Fish 'n Bread with Holy Water combo.

Jesus Christ! (No pun intended.)

Does every OT biblical scholar in here really thing this is a quote from Jesus? Why don't you just go ahead an attribute "trickle down economics" to Jesus too? That's quicker and more to the point you're trying to make, and it's no more ignorant than the false attribution you're already using.

EDIT: I mean, in the bible, Jesus LITERALLY GAVE PEOPLE FISH TO FEED THEM FOR A DAY! It's dumbfounding just how wrong you guys are being in order to justify your "conservative Christian" reading of the bible.

Central to the aspect of helping the poor is a person to recognize the need and make the decision for themselves to help them, and in turn being blessed yourself by helping them. Welfare is essentially taking the decision from the individual and having government make it for them, forcibly taking from one and handing over to another. There is no personal blessing to receive in that.
