I've seen this comment two or three times on this thread. If y'all are such gun experts, how are you missing the fact that if you take the plug out of a shotgun it can hold 4 shells plus one in the chamber. So, unchambered, you have four shots. How many real life shootouts have you seen where someone shoots more than once or twice? This isn't the movie "Taken". shite goes down, a shot or two is fired, shite is over.

Because most people aren't using their duck gun for home defense. They're using shotguns with shorter barrels that hold 8 or 9 rounds.

This even further debunks the "two shots with a shotgun" arguement. Unless you're shooting an over/under, you have atleast 4 round capacity.

How do you guys hide them from the kids? I have a daughter and even though she isn't able to walk yet, I need to plan ahead. Any suggestions?

Get a biometric safe and put it in the nightstand drawer.

I also have hooks inside the closet above the door... good for mounting a shotgun. It's out of sight and out of reach for small children but easy enough to grab without having to fumble around with a safe.

I guess I was confused. I thought you were saying that a shotgun wasn't enough firepower because it has lower round capacity.

Why even have a gun safe if you are going to keep the key in the door. Can you imagine a scenario where a perp breaks into your home while you arent there and approaches your gun safe with disappointment only to be relieved to find that key in the keyhole?

Thought it was obvious, but key does not stay in the door when I am not at home.

A shotgun is the right answer here.

Agreed. A shotgun is (IMO) the perfect home defense weapon.

I've only skimmed this thread but I didn't notice if anyone had mentioned taking into account if the weapon and/or rounds you are using will penetrate interior walls.

Something to keep in mind is that you need to be aware what could be beyond you and a possible intruder. In my situation, the kid rooms are on the opposite side of the house from my room. So if I need to engage an intruder it would probably mean that I have exited my room with a loaded weapon and will be firing in the direction of my kids rooms. Obviously I don't want rounds that have a higher likelihood of penetrating through an interior wall and ending up in their room(s).

Wrong. First shot usually off unless point blank as your a surprised. Next shots more accurate.

Your life must be hell if you think you need a gun next to your bed.

Then your weapon of choice should be an AR chambered in .223 and certainly not a shotgun with buck and especially slugs. Fragmentation in a light rifle round like that is less lethal through a wall (it is a myth about lack of penetration as everything will cut right through drywall, especially buck) because the smaller fragments have less energy.

Ageed, what I'm saying is that it's highly unlikely that it's going to be a running battle of gunplay back and forth with 10-20 shots fired. It's going to be bang bang bang and that's about it. People either hauled arse, or are bleeding or dead. 20 round magazines (not clips for Christ's sake) are fine and all, but probably not needed.

I have 4 rounds in my shotgun, plus 4 more in a shell holder that mounts to the side of the stock. I pray I never have to use it, but I am glad that it's there if I ever need it.

A .223 is actually a good home defense gun. The bullets break up a lot easier than in walls and furniture and shite than a shotgun. Think about shooting a 12 gauge with 00 buckshot across your bedroom, that's what 7 yards maybe? At those ranges a shotgun is basically a rifle, I'd rather have the small caliber .223. Hitchcock45 has a video about this also. On my phone or I'd link it.
