Rickety, my phellow phan...ya got it all wrong!
As someone who has worn a suit every day for 20 years, I will steer you into the conservative side--dark blue or charcoal suits, black or oxblood cap toe/wingtip shoes (leather bottoms only), a striped silk tie (don't cheat on a tie--a great tie is the tits--mine all run about $125-$175, but they just plain tie, hang, and look better), and a white or light blue Oxford shirt.
Forget the vest.
Set yourself apart with a nicer look by having better quality clothing rather than bold colors. Once you start to build up your suit inventory you can start to play with some bolder colors and patterns., but starting out--conservative.
