I have it pretty good here in Baton Rouge. My job is interesting and pays well plus I have a backup in case that fell through for some reason. So, in principle my plan is to stay here and enjoy what life has given me. Moving is a young man's game.

However, I have little kids and I can't help but think I'm doing them a disservice by having them grow up here

Same. That ship has sailed though for the next few years. My youngest kid is almost in HS now.

OP - not sure if you've ever spent a winter in Montana or Wyoming (I have). It can be a bit of a shock for many Southerners

Sounds like a solid plan.

I don't really have 5 year plans. I'd like to be retired in 5-10 and move to a small coastal town, but we will see.

Living 10 more years would be awesome.

Nashville, Eastern Tennessee, North GA, western North Carolina, western South Carolina, Austin (hill country) are all great options and within a 10 hour drive or less to Louisiana, for those that want out of the state but not too far.

Retire in 22 months and get the hell out of Louisiana. Probably tour the country for a couple of years in a fifth wheel and figure out where to put down roots.

I eliminated cigarettes, then I go to cigars, then I go to pipes, then I go to chewing tobacco, then I'm on to that nicotine gum.

I want out of the extreme heat but I also don't want to live in Minnesota. A nice moderate climate with some terrain is my ideal place.

I've been chewing nicotine gum for about 8-10 years now baw. I think the original idea was to quit this too

All of the places I listed I feel would be feasible for you. New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona are also great for terrain and quality of life.

Wife and I both lived in Iowa for a few years (where we met) and she has family in Montana. I'll take that weather any day over months on end of continual swamp arse.

My sister lives in Austin. It's miserably hot to me. Ideally I'd like to live in the PNW but that probably won't happen.

Eastern Tennessee or Western NC is probably doable. We'd be closer to my wife's parents but further from mine. They are all in their 70s now.

Chattanooga, Bryson City, Boone are all very nice areas. Western suburbs of Charlotte too.

I don't mind it either but a lot of people visit these places during the summer and don't understand what 6 degrees feels like. My dad has owned a property near Bozeman for years. I'd live up there in a heartbeat but the job opportunities are so so at best. Billings has a decent job market and is cheaper.

Really can’t say I have a plan. I am 35 years old, don’t have kids (don’t think I want them). I guess just advance in career and make more money, stay in good health, and have a good time. Not many actual milestones set.

I'd live in a lot of those areas. My kid has 5 years left of school though. Seems cruel to me to uproot her at this point when everyone is pretty content.

I don’t have a five year plan anymore. I actually have no plans, no ambitions, and no real goals or direction of any kind. I have a decent job, decent car, decent house that I rent. I’m not happy, but I don’t really know what I should be working towards. I don’t have a family to support or kids to raise. I don’t really care that much about advancing my career or earning more money. I guess I could work towards buying my home or improving my physical fitness, but I just have zero motivation or desire to do anything. Everything feels pointless because I am not working towards anything, but just kinda persisting. I just kinda continue to survive doing the bare minimum to continue doing so.
