Those pictures depressed the hell out of me. The 90s went hard.

"We all know what’s wrong.". Wrong people hang out there and act like animals.

Lakeside Mall , in Metairie is thriving today just as much as it was when I grew up in the 80’s .

I haven't been there in years but I'm sure that it can't beat mid 80's Lakeside mall, going to the record store to grab some LP's or cassettes, the arcade to play Punch Out or Spy Hunter, or going to Eckerd's to grab a Star Wars action figure or even walking to the movie theatre to watch Rocky IV.

Mixed use developments that have a walkable core with shops, restaurants, office and apts/condos that mimic urban living is what is replacing them.

I’m jsit grateful got to experience the 1980s when American Mall culture was at its zenith. What a time to be young and alive.

Weekends had unsupervised teenagers who caused havoc. Fights, theft, straight thug behavior. Folks didn’t feel safe. Stores that actually appealed to those who spent the money left and were replaced with Footlocker and Abercrombie type stores. Growing up it was Sears and Montgomery Wards.

It is sad in that another third space is dying. People are losing communal gathering places

People have been trained to show with computers. Human interaction is so 20th century.

Lakeside mall in Metairie does very well.

That place is nicer than the columbus circle mall by Trump Tower in NY.

Malls are too cultured to stay in business

Not wrong. I don’t remember the 80s but the early-mid 90s were the only thing more 90s than the late 90s so I’d believe it. Glamour shots for the whole crew.

This must transcend state lines. Back in the day we had three malls and as a kid I remember being very in tune with exactly how much culture I should expect to experience at each with slight variations depending on the time of day.

When the mall became the local fight club, that was the beginning of the end

Zero customer service to be found,

I know it’s beating a dead horse because it’s everywhere but this is a huge reason.

No one gives a frick anymore to help you at the mall.

You are on your own and you will like it.

frick all of that.

I know y'all like to believe that black folks are the reason malls go out of business but the 2 in my area are booming and one is located in an area that is, according to the last census, 57% black and both are in a metro area which is 41% black. They is packed from open to close and they both are, as we speak, in the middle of remodeling and expanding. It would be more likely these two malls would shut down if it weren't for black folks....

I'm guessing you're part of the 57%?

I would much prefer to shop online. The nearest mall is a 2 hour drive from my house

The old style indoor malls are dead, but the outdoor malls in our area are thriving. It isn't just a food court and department stores, it is nicer restaurants and more trendy shopping places, but every time I have to go there it is packed.

That's how it is in SoCal.

The truth is that too many troublemakers just started hanging out there in droves. I'm saying this in the nicest way possible.
