Culcha put a knife in malls long before the Internet had a serious impact.

This can be applied to a lot of public venues

Vendors standing in the middle of the walkways are like pop-up ads in real life and should be banned.

Movie theaters were also wonderful but the bottom 10% ruined it for everyone else like they ruin everything else for everyone.

Hammond Square was my hangout when I was a kid. Miss it.

I go to Lakeside mall still. It hasn’t been taken over by random stores that no one cares about full of starter jackets. Yet

As soon as you get that "Urban clothing" or weave store it's all downhill after that.

Think about this. Before there were malls, if a person had to get several different things they had to go to one end of town to get this.. Then the other side of town to get that. It took up time.

Then the malls came and all of a sudden you could go to one location and buy the kids school close, tools at Sears, shoes, appliances, etc. One location. Then at some malls they had movie theaters, arcades, etc so it was also entertainment.

Parents could bring the kids and go shopping in peace while a movie or games kept them entertained.

Then once a faster internet became mainstreamed and people were able to buy things any time of day and have it brought to their house, that hurt the malls. Then you throw in the fact that improvements in TV and video game technology made it just as good or better to stay home to watch a movie or play video games, it made malls less interesting.

Running a retail store is very expensive compared to selling shite online.

The old style indoor malls are dead, but the outdoor malls in our area are thriving. It isn't just a food court and department stores, it is nicer restaurants and more trendy shopping places, but every time I have to go there it is packed.

Acadiana Mall in Lafayette

That place has been on a massive downhill slide for a few years now. Last time I went to Dillards it smelled like skunk weed. For that mall to make it Northgate Mall would need to make a comeback.

What’s right with them?
If I needed a pair of pants I could park in one place and walk a few thousand steps and actually try on the clothes. I could go into several shops like Benneton, Merry Go Round, Oak Tree or Chess king until I found what I was looking for. I could meet up with friends and hit on girls while I was sipping in an Orange Julius. You can do similar today at Lakeside in Metairie. It's apparently thriving.

Sounds like a which came first chicken or egg type thing.

Not the only factor, but as online options (with lower operating costs) increased, shoppers spent less in malls. Combine that with the same reason white people will stop going to track meets now, and you've covered about 99% of the reasons why.

I agree, that the decline of malls introduced a social vacuum of which nothing has taken its place. In fifty more years, egghead sociologists will write books about all this.

To my knowledge, Katy Mills Mall is still viable but it is overrun with Spanish speaking folks. I think Mexicans are even bussed in direct from Mexico on shopping trips.

FTR, didn't Cortana open in the late 70s? That is, malls were a think well before the 90s.

Would way rather shop for clothes in a mall. Sometimes you just gotta try it on to see how it fits. Internet returns are a drag. Besides at the Mall you can go get a hot pretzel with mustard,

I’m tempted to say it’s just nostalgia, but going to the mall and going to the movie store were fun activities. Online shopping for clothes and movies to watch are not fun activities in my experience.

If you were a teen in the 80's/90's, you had to go to the mall to get away from parents and hang out with friends. Today, teens can do that virtually through their own phones.
