Oxford is a town built on culture and heritage. It has some of the best food in the South. Look up John Currence. There are more bars and good restaurants on the square than Baton Rouge as a whole. Baton Rouge is not New Orleans. Its strip malls, chains, murders, and traffic. If it weren't for LSU, Baton Rouge would be Jackson, MS.

You're actually going to lecture me on my own spiel?

OK, I'll play...

Let's have the foods that make Oxford truly unique. Low country one pot cooking, fine dining, molecular gastronomy, or Nuevo Americana. Let's have it.

Music? What music genre is Oxford responsible for?

No, you're right. Baton Rouge doesn't have it either, but unlike Oxford and Tuscaloosa, it's not that far down the road to enjoy. I'll give Oxford good table manners and a terrible desire to have people think they are something special, but special or unique they aren't. It's as usual, always about being perceived as something than being it, much like what you'll find at many Whole Foods, lots of people who don't have a clue about what being a foodie means, but terribly want you to see them and perceive them as being in the "in crowd"

My parents didn't want to pay out of state either. That's why I wound up going to LSU. There are many people I know from HS who commute from home, just hang out with hs friends. Tulane or Rice would've been really fun, but I couldn't ask my parents to pay for it. I have 2 other siblings.

"What's a Northport or Cottondale?
I know enough about Tuscaloosa to know my favorite college team's town is better."

I've actually heard the gist of that from LSU and UT fans I know that 'know' Tuscaloosa.

I wouldn't compare the culture of New Orleans to Birmingham. But they are a metro area of comparable size, if you're looking for things to do.

If I could choose, I would take the spring and all the rush parties and other big spring parties over football season any day. Tuscaloosa in the spring is great. besides A-Day there's no reason for any trash to come into town

My dad is old school LSU, went to law school at Loyola, he REALLY hates Tulane. I could have gone on a big scholarship, but he refused to pay for the rest. I've enjoyed my time at LSU, though even though since coming here I've never lived more than about 500ft off of my dad's daily commute and no more than 45 minutes from home.

why the hell would anyone from baton rouge choose to pay out of state tuition to go to Ole Miss or Alabama, or any other SEC school for that matter? I couldn't imagine asking mommy or daddy for 70K a year to "make new friends" and/or "get away from home"

I know a couple of guys from the Tampa area, and they both were raised in a heavy UF household. Hell I think one of their dad's even played at UF and one of them went to AU and one went to Bama. When I asked why, they both said "They wanted to get away from it." Sounds similar to what the La kids going to Ttown are dealing with.

Whenever this stuff comes up people talk about how close LSU is to New Orleans as some big selling point. I could count on one hand the number of people I know who spend more than even just Mardi Gras there in a given year that aren't from there.

It may be an awesome place to have nearby, but very few people use it.

I came to LSU from Alabama. But I had out of state waived. When more than half your HS graduating class goes to Bama or Auburn it can be ideal to experience something different.

This was always rather common practice, at least with Ole Miss I know. Is it not anymore?

I agree with the bama and ole miss thought because basically those two schools aren't good and I imagine the towns suck just as much arse as baton rouge.

Other sec schools I can see someone wanting to go to for educational reasons. Vandy, Florida, Tamu are all justifiable to go to.

Not everyone is poor and some can even afford such liberties.

it is different for Louisiana kids though since not many other states offer programs like TOPS, because if you can get into LSU, your receive TOPS, which covers your tuition at the very least

To an extent.

But if that is all there was to then the spread would be more equal between public SEC schools, but it isn't.
Alabama does a ton of work on recruiting regionally. Bama also has spent a lot of money making campus tours and the campus itself appealing.

Throw it all together and you get a dramatically higher out of state % than the other public SEC schools.

And Alabama is much more aggressive with its scholarship offerings for OOS students than LSU is. LSU was doing well, but gutted almost all of those programs in 08-09 when all the budget cut stuff was going on.

Unless things have changed since 2011 when my sister was getting out of HS, LSU has a pretty pathetic OOS recruiting presence.

I'm glad BR doesn't actually suck as much as people let on. That would suck.
