What is the worst metaphor you’ve ever seen used?

I once heard someone refer to University of Arkansas as a flagship.
I’ve never really understood the phrase kicked the tires.
Oh and sorry but life really isn’t like a box of chocolates now is it?

“Life is like a box of chocolates” is a simile, not a metaphor.

Years ago I worked with a guy from central america who was the king of mixed metaphors and botched figures of speech. He’d talk about “throwing a monkey in the wrench” and such. Also loved to use the term “per se” in meetings, never correctly.

Cam Newton used the Titanic as a metaphor for his team to keep going on.

My lil Italian MIL used to say that a rough/clumsy person was "like a bowl in a china shop". I thought about explaining it to her but it was funnier when she said it that way when fussing at the kids while roughhousing.

I don't think kicking the tires is a metaphor, per se, but I use it all the time.

Unless you are literally kicking the tires, then you are speaking metaphorically.

See, this is so close to the correct use of “per se” that it would be trivial to say anything about it, but my former Honduran co-worker used it like a teen girl uses the word “like”. And in an office environment eveybody just lets shite like that go. Pretty sure there was another guy who kept count of how many times he used “per se” per meeting.
