Pretty happy in an older 1900sf house with 4 of us. I wish it was more modern with more built in storage, but oh well.

People spend way too much of their income on bigger houses with more shite than what is needed.

Family of 4 here in a 3800 sq ft house. Although we are about to add a 240sq ft sunroom and a 1/2 bath. Plenty of room.

I grew up in a 1200 sq ft house with four of us and it was fine. Kids don't grasp size of their surroundings like an adult. I now have 2850 sq ft for my family and there are five of us but the boys share a room since it is only 3 bed 2-1/2 bath.

I would say a minimum of 4 wings [not counting servants' quarters, etc]. Maybe an acre under roof should do.

What's a "square foot?"

I lived for years with wife and 2 kids in 1150 sqft, it was perfectly fine. Now have 2500 for just the two of us, I go upstairs maybe twice a year. It is just a waste of money paying utilities and taxes on the unused space, I would love to go back to about 1200, I don't want any visitors, and the kids have enough money to go to a hotel!

I grew up in a 3000 sq. foot house and I was an only child.

My dad passed away when I was in middle school. My mom bought a 5000 sq. foot house shortly there after with a master downstairs. Had 3 bedrooms to myself upstairs.

She still lives there today. Crazy imo.

ETA: I'm trying to get her to downsize or move to a condo or something.

This. So many people move out to the boonies to have space they don't need and then bitch about traffic lol. 1400 is fine for a family of four. Maybe 1800-2000 is "ideal" more than that is just wasting money.

The house I grew up in was around 4,000 sq/ft with 4 people. Me, my brother, Mom and Dad. It was too big, imo. Id say 2500-3000 sq/ft is perfect.

My family of six lived in a 2600 soft house until last October and we used every inch of space. To tight. Would have been fine for Four though. We bought a house with 3200 soft already finished and I just recently finished 1300 soft in the basement. Plenty of room now.

Everyone is overdoing it, IMO. A family of 4 could live comfortable in 1500 sq ft. We have a little under 2k and have plenty of room. Master BR, both kids have their own room. 2 bath. Big kitchen/dining room. Laundry room. Living room and a large study/playroom. Also the shed $ tool room that aren't included in Sq ft.

2500 would be nice but I think yall are overestimating what it would take for a young family to be comfortable.

By overdoing it I'm not meaning wasteful or anything. I mean advising a young family of 4 what he needs...

Just built the perfect 4 person house without being wasteful...2650 living & 4,150 total. It's roomy but practical.

4 beds, 3 baths, giant kitchen / informal dining, walk in pantry, niche office, no formal dining, large laundry, all rooms have walk in closets, 2 car garage, 1 car garage, 8x14 storage for wife to keep me out of attic.
