I was 27 when my first child was born. We should have waited until we were in our 30s.

I'm 26 and just my had my first. Going for another one in a couple years. Hopefully both with be off the payroll by the time I hit 50, and then I can start living and traveling.

Given the choice of being 26 dink or 55 dink(that you are paying for), I'll chose 55 everytime.

26 for me and working on the second one.

I think people wait too long sometimes waiting on the right moment.

Most of my friends are between 27-30 and are just beginning to get engaged/married. I'd say it'll be a good 2-3 yrs before babies start happening.

I don't know why you're getting downvoted. This is proven, along with other maladies like downs.

Very true. And then they go "Oh crap, we're getting old, we should pop one out."

Thankfully I missed the "have them early" boat so I guess it I ever have any it'll be late 20s. Good thing though about having at 21-23 is you're early 40 when they're off the payroll.

We had our son at 28. Will likely try for the second (and probably last) at 30. I think that's a perfect window (at least for us). Out of the house before we're 50, but we a financially stable enough to do whatever we want.

Someone earlier in the thread stated "whenever you fully understand what raising a child entails" or something to that effect. I don't know if that is possible. There are things I thought I'd never be able to do easily (like change a dirty diaper), but it doesn't even phase me. Then there are other things that I thought I'd be able to handle, that I'm disappointed in myself and need to learn to deal with better (like crying in the middle of the night and lack of sleep). No matter how old you are, you aren't going to be "ready" for a child. And that's okay, you learn. But it's not like you can get a dog and practice or something. It's an experience you have to live through to understand.

Same here. I have some friends that are proponents of the "have them early" idea. I see the appeal, but I'd like to enjoy my 20s kid-free, too.

Higher chance of occurrence for those with AMO, sure but that doesn't tell the whole story.

80% down syndrome and other chromosomal abnormality births are to woman under 35.

i dont have kids so maybe listening to me is a bad idea. 41 FTR.

I would wait until I was at least 27-29. All my friends that had them before that age had a real tough time raising them. when you have a child, you have to put everything before the child and that can be really hard to do when your friends are out partying.

Lots of factors go into this. Ideal is obviously a stable marriage w/ sufficient income. You also want to be sure to have enjoyed life w/o kids enough that you don't resent them and feel like you missed out on your own youth. For most people I would advise against having kids before age 25.

As for a max age for women, the health risks increase after the mid-30's, so I'd say for women the "right" age is probably 25-35.

Men don't have the same health issues, but you don't want to be unable to play catch, die when your kids are too young, etc, so I'd say 25-45 is "right".

This x infinity.

It's not about a certain age or financial state - it's about getting to a point in your life where you're stable emotionally, financially and in terms of a routine. My wife and I had our son when we were 27 - we both had good careers, okay financially and had a very stable home life and set day-to-day routines. It was a really good age for us because you're old enough to be "established" yet young enough to be "young" parents (we'll only be in our mid-40s when he hits college).

I have never understood and will never understand how and why someone can have an unstable life and still make a conscious decision to bring a child into this world.

How old is too old for a person to have a child - especially a woman? I hear more and more about women that are 40 having a child. I know there are increased health risks to mother and child as you get older, but I don't know what age would be considered "too old." 35? 40? Older than that?

The real risks for downs comes after the woman is 40. 35 and older is automatically considered a "high risk" pregnancy. However...my doctor said that is just because they had to have a cutoff age and picked 35. I'm 37 and currently trying to get pregnant. Only want one child. Gonna try until I'm 38. After that....seriously doubt I'll keep trying due to worry about health risks to baby(the risk of downs is at the age of the woman WHEN SHE DELIVERS not conceives). Will not go the IVF route(too expensive, not a guarantee, and don't want triplets or quints).
