Johnston/Murphy used to make great shoes but their quality didn't keep up with prices. I love my couple pair of Allen Edmonds but I also have big feet and they are easier to find than the J/Ms.

It is possible that the shoes sold in department stores are of lower quality than the stores itself, as I bought a pair from a dept. Store and they sucked.

Some stores like say Shoe Carnival have older shoes, and this is how they get away with selling name brands at a lower price. However, because the shoes are older, that means the glue has had a longer time to break down. Hence why name brand shoes at bargain stores often seem to not last as long.

I buy Johnston & Murphy every time I buy a new pair of brown dress shoes every 4 or 5 years.

They make too many models with corrected grain leather or rubber soles or lacking Goodyear welts. Their top line stuff is full grain leather, but at that point you're paying Allen Edmonds $$$. I prefer AE because they have amazing customer service.

They aren't bad for a mid level shoe. Some are not as good as others. I believe you can find leather soles from them as well, so it's not all "cheap".

But, when you hold them up to my AEs, there really is a noticeable difference. There's also a 200 dollar price difference as well.

I was buying the once a year work shoes for a while (Bass, Maddens, etc). Finally decided to go from polo and khakis to button down and slacks as normal work attire. Bought some JM's a year ago and happy with how they've held up. When it's time for new black shoes I will go with JM's again. I actually like the rubber trim with the wooden soles. I like my shoes to be a little more quiet on marble floors.

Mid to lower end quality. Average for the price.

Allen Edmonds and Magnanni are much better but way more expensive.
