Apparently i need one. I have a passport but i don't want to carry that on all my domestic travel. How is it different than my DL. Is this just a money grab? Another government required waste of time.

Big brother keeping tabs on you

I believe the methods they use to create it are much more sophisticated and therefore harder to forge. Basically it's just a higher level of security.
ETA: Also wasn't sure by your post but your REAL ID would become your drivers license. It isn't like something in addition to that and your passport.

It is basically the federal government's attempt to implement a national ID card.

This and also there is no uniformity between states which makes it harder for security to recognize a fraudulent drivers license. Iowa, Louisiana, Kentucky etc are all completely different. No way to really catch a decent fraud if the security agent isn't from the issueing state.

Some advice. Always carry a second form of ID when you travel to get through airport security.
I had a wallet stolen in Seattle last year and would have been stuck there If I'd not had my passport in my laptop bag.

This is the answer to almost every single thing any government at a local, state, or federal level has done in the last 50 year.

The REAL ID Act of 2005, Pub.L. 109–13, 119 Stat. 302, enacted May 11, 2005, is an Act of Congress that modifies U.S. federal law pertaining to security, authentication, and issuance procedures standards for the state driver's licenses and identity documents, as well as various immigration issues pertaining to terrorism.
The law sets forth requirements for state driver's licenses and ID cards to be accepted by the federal government for "official purposes", as defined by the Secretary of the United States Department of Homeland Security. The Secretary of Homeland Security has defined "official purposes" as boarding commercially operated airline flights and entering federal buildings and nuclear power plants, although the law gives the Secretary the unlimited authority to require a "federal identification" for any other purposes.[4]
The REAL ID Act implements the following:
Title II of the act establishes new federal standards for state-issued driver's licenses and non-driver identification cards.
Changing visa limits for temporary workers, nurses, and Australian citizens.
Funding some reports and pilot projects related to border security.
Introducing rules covering "delivery bonds" (similar to bail, but for aliens who have been released pending hearings).
Updating and tightening the laws on application for asylum and deportation of aliens for terrorism.
Waiving laws that interfere with construction of physical barriers at the borders.
