plenty of socially awkward kids who go to regular school. we as a society place way too much weight on "social this/social that". really just a bunch of horseshite.

I agree. Two of my younger brothers played in 6 man football leagues here in Texas while they were in high school. One of them successfully walked on to the A&M team. First homeschooler to do so, I believe.

That's really the bottom line. You'll run into some weird fricks no matter the school system.

Homeschooled kids have wild variation, just like public school, but the extremes are more extreme.

It's not for everyone but if you can do it, I think it's a good way to go about it.

If you homeschool correctly your kids will be ahead of other kids their age mentally, emotionally, educationally, and socially. If you teach them religion, then spiritually, too. There is more time for after school activities. You can speed up or slow down their school work based on the child's ability to comprehend the assignment. You can tailor it specifically to your child's pace of learning.
Most homeschoolers join a co-op which plan social activities for the month.
The wierdos don't join these.
Last time I walked into a public high school there were plenty of socially awkward students. A kid needs to be on a team sport, so they can learn teamwork and social skills.
Many home schoolers are part of a large family and social skills are developed dealing with many siblings.
The fewer siblings mentality of our society has impacted children socially. They need other brothers/sisters. They learn conflict resolution very quickly in a large family.

Then you only hang out with weird people then. All my kids were home schooled at some point. They were NEVER socially awkward. I've seen some weird ones for sure, but don't class them all together. It ain't so.....

I feel like the vast majority of parents that are capable of actually homeschooling kids likely have too good of jobs to handle an undertaking like that. some outlier situations with smart stay at home parents, but probably a rarity

I was homeschooled off and on until high school. I think I learned a lot but was stunted socially. Kids are pretty terrible or at least they were in high school so I don't mind that I missed out on that garbage for elementary and middle school.

In my experience kids actually mellow out a bit in highschool. Middle school is a hellhole.

You mean they don't spend their teen and early adult years whoring it up, getting fat with an alcohol addiction, and setting themselves up for a life of angst, like you and your dumb buddies?

Take this as just my opinion. I think the development of social skills and conflict resolution you learn in grade school is equally if not more important than what you learn in grade school. It frustrates me to no end to see more and more schools preventing conflict resolution amongst kids. Now I'm not saying allow kids to have fight club, but dammit. This is why young people can't handle their shite.

Every person I know that was homeschooled has the social skills of a possum.

Wikipedia list of homeschooled people

I think a lot of the negative comments in this come from people whose experience with homeschoolers comes from when they themselves were a kid, in the 1980s or 90s.

Homeschooling and homeschoolers are just different now. If you want to know how it's different, do some research. You shouldn't hold strong opinions about things you don't understand.

And you haven't met them..... And yes, I've seen some strange ones out there from home school. We were concerned about the social issue so it was something we made sure didn't happen. They were very involved in sports and other events. There are many normal kids who are home schooled, just like there are strange ones. I've seen kids in public and private schools who don't even have a clue what sex they want to be next week. Get off my back big boy.
