When you factor in the money you pay for baggage and seat assignments (I assume Spirit, like Frontier, makes you pay TWICE for you seat) ... the savings evaporate. Avoid Spirit unless it's like a New Orleans to Houston flight or something real short.

I took them for the first time last week, Fort Lauderdale to New Orleans. It was a last minute trip and I got a round trip ticket for $100 (go to airport if you can, cheaper than online). I did not have to bring anything with me so I only had a back pack which is free. For a last minute airfare I would use them again. Seats are a little closer together and do not recline.

I flew to Dallas round trip for 60 bucks... was great kept my clothes in a booksack and no issues

Worst "airline" in the business. It's not a legit airline and a complete scam given how they advertise low prices and then tack on fees after fees.

If you understand the "fees" it is still cheap. I didn't bring a carry on, I didn't change my seat, and I didn't buy insurance. So my total with taxes was 58 and change... flight was on time and while the accommodations sucks for the price I would fly again.

Not recommended. Do not be fooled into the low price.

Stay far away, unless you shop at Walmart. Spirit airlines is the Walmart of airlines, maybe even dollar store.

Flying spirit is an art.
You have to go into it knowing it's cheap and pretty ghetto. But that's the point. I fly it all the time when I want to head to see family in Louisiana from Dallas. You can't beat 160 round trip. I travel a lot for work anyways so I am used to packing a weeks worth of clothes in a backpack. When I fly spirit I just bring a backpack with my laptop and a few change of clothes. That way I'm not charged for the carryon.

I've never had an issue with it, but I'm not a fricking moron.
If you aren't a fricking moron, it's great and cheap. Just don't buy any extra stuff.
Recently went Nola to Detroit for $85 round trip.

I will say a lot of people in this thread have no idea what they are talking about. The only thing you have to pay for is baggage fees. I signed up for that 9 dollar fair club crap which makes baggage fees cheaper and tickets cheaper.
Spirit is best for someone traveling alone and booking last minute. I would also not take it for longer trips. I use it mostly to go to Houston and sometimes Miami. Roundtrip is usually under 100 bucks.
Do not pay for anything at the airport, they will bend you over with fees. Do not select a seat unless you want to pay for it. They will assign a seat to you for free. I've never not gotten an aisle seat this way. Might just be my luck. Also, print your boarding pass at home, they will charge you for printing it there.

This. It's different from other airlines, but that's why the price is so low. Plan ahead if you are going to use them. It's cheapest to pay for your bags at the same time you book your flight. DO NOT pay for anything at the airport, as they will gouge you. Print your boarding pass ahead of time as well.
I live in Dallas and its super cheap and easy to get back to NOLA. I also wouldn't use them for any flight over 2.5 hours long.

This goes back to my point except I say under 2 hour flights only. Their seats are really uncomfortable, even by typical airline standards. They are more narrow than any other airline, they have less padding for your arse, and they have less legroom.
I fly Miami to Vegas a lot. Spirit has the perfect flight for me that leaves at 8pm and gets in at 10:30 (gain 3 hours in time change). The first hour of the flight is fine. By hour two, it is getting uncomfortable sitting in that tiny space on a hard seat cushion. Hours 3-5, I'm just pissed off and feel like I'm in a cage and just want to beat someone's arse. So, after flying that Spirit flight twice for over 5 hours each way, I've decided paying an extra $250+ for a nonstop flight on American or JetBlu is worth it.

I used to fly them often back and forth direct from Orlando to Atlantic city.
Cheap upgrade to "first class" and it was easy and enjoyable.
Those days are long gone.
They suck and I will never fly them again unless I have no other choice.
