Well-defended could mean many things, but most secure is somewhere like Cheyenne Mountain or Iron Mountain's facility in Pennsylvania.

actually...the vault hasn't been opened for a public viewing in like 40 or 50 years. So in reality, while the stash is most likely gone, no one really knows. Secondly, the vault holds all kinds of valuables for limited amounts of time like the constitution and at one time like 500 bricks of pure cocaine...no lie.
all of this doesn't matter as it could still just be guarding the secret that the vault is empty and still be one the most heavily guarded places on the planet.
