Early on in Parenthood, my daughter is maybe 7 months old.
Maybe 8.
I put her in a rubber swing and went 10 feet away, to what I don't know. I looked back and she's upside down, in the air.
I caught her before her hair was mussed. Just. 1 mm from tragic.
Never told her mother.
I am so lucky.
I moved so fast.

Walked in my son’s room when he was 6 months old. He was in his crib, his lips were blue, and he wasn’t breathing. My wife came in and went hysterical. I picked him up and shook him. He finally came to. If we hadn’t walked in when we did he’d probably been. SIDS victim. He had just had his vaccinations and the one they gave him is now discontinued because of this.

Had a total power outage when I was a kid and this caused our garage door to stay open overnight, as well as no alarm system or phones or anything(Only my dad had an old Nokia cell phone and it was dead).

1. Conducting an intel operation in another country we were allies with, bordering another country we weren’t at the time. That’s about as much details as I got.
2. Surfing in North Carolina. Some dude from the dock yells “Hey guys, there’s about a 10 foot tiger shark near y’all”. I paddled the frick out at like 80mph. Couldn’t feel my arms when I made it to the beach.
3. First deployment in the Marines. Nothing crazy happened but at 19 in a foreign country we were at war with was quite scary.

When I looked into the depths of hell.

Robbed at gun point in my driveway with 6 month old daughter still in car. Can’t forget that feeling of a barrel pushed against the back of my head and thinking I can’t go out like this. Not here with my baby girl.

My daughter was 8 years old and was in a bad car wreck. She saw a family member die.
She had some bad issues and they wanted to do surgery but cooler heads prevailed. She came through just fine
frick that. You can beat my arse but I’m a mess if my kids are hurting

There are a few times I've been straight up terrified.
1. El Reno Tornado 5/31/13- This was the largest and one of the most powerful tornadoes ever. It was right after a really bad one wiped the town of Moore, OK off the map. I was in a traffic jam outside OKC and the tornado was headed right for me, I thought I was going to die. Luckily it didn't though.
2. I was on Starring to donate some stuff to St. Vincent DePaul. I was pulling in the parking lot when I see this thug dude and a Dominos Pizza guy getting into it in their cars in front of me. The thug guy pulled out a gun and I got really scared when he looked at me. I thought I was about to see a murder, but he put it away. Needless to say I got the hell out of there.
3. When I was a little kid at the beach I was swimming in the water, looking for shells or something, when I look up and see a big arse barracuda, about 6 feet probably, about a yard away from me, face to face. I freaked and sprinted back to shore.
4. Kayak fishing in the Gulf, I noticed a fin, following me. It turned out to be three big bull sharks, probably 10-13 feet, that were following my kayak. I was scared, but I just took a bunch of the fish I had caught earlier and dumped them, and the sharks went away. I may have wasted a bunch of fish, but its always better to fish another day.
Honorable mention: Baton Rouge Derecho 4/27/15- Yes, this video was at 9:20 IN THE MORNING

I know the pain caused from this loss all too well. My son was 7 months old. I'm a trauma nurse in the ER and was working that day. Kyle was at the babysitter's. We got a call that there was a 7 month old male inbound, CPR in progress. Had no idea who it would end up being. Paramedics arrived with him on the stretcher and when they got him to the trauma bay (where I was) and transferred him onto our stretcher and they moved so we could take over I saw it was my son. He was pronounced just a few minutes later. I only remember bits and pieces from that point on for the next several days. Pain I would not wish on anyone. Never has gotten easier. Just sort of learned to live with that pain. Miss him every second of every day with every fiber of my being.

That’s the most horrifying story of anything I’ve ever read on this site. When you read comments like that, prior to having kids, it goes in one ear and out the other. As a parent, you cry on the inside for people who experience that much suffering over what happened.
I’m so sorry.
I’m so sorry.

Thanks. Ppl ask why the babysitter didn't call ahead to tell me. She could barely tell anyone her name much less think to call me. Her 7 yr old daughter called 911. She was in absolute shock. She ended up becoming an alcoholic after that and we lost touch. She later told me after his death that he'd been in the crib napping and she thought she'd heard him wake up not 5 minutes prior. She said she went to check on him when she didn't hear him anymore and he was cyanotic. I don't blame her at all for his death. In SC it's required by law that any deaths younger than 3 be autopsied by SLED's (South Carolina Law Enforcement Division) forensic pathologist if they are not terminally ill. He called me after the findings and told me he wished he could give me a reason for his death but that the autopsy revealed a perfectly normal 7 month old. Cause of death was attributed to SIDS.

It’s hard to find anything positive about any of that. Just awful.
You’ve grown from it, and haven’t spiraled into dependency. It’s almost like he died, and she sort of died that day, too.
