Completely level and completely aligned axles.

everyone i have been in was won by a flat , aerodynamic car.
I've seen cars that were just the block painted show up for weigh in and then were literally hacked with a butcher knife to reduce the weight to below the limit fly past cars where hours were spent trying to make the car as aerodynamic as possible. At that scale aerodynamics means nothing.

quote:Aerodynamics plays a small role, but the main advantage to a flat or I-shaped car is it allows you to put more weight toward the rear of the car. Instead of wood weight all over, you can put the weight right where you want it.

makes sense. I just know that these are the cars that i have seen win at least 20 times.

YouTube ruined these things.
I'm not sure YouTube was that big of a thing when my boys were in Scouts. There was no "online searching" for how to do it when they made theirs. Trial and error.

Just let the kids do it and however it turns out it turns out, it's really more about fun.
frick that. My first year to do the Pinewood Derby we actually tried to observe the rules and my dad hardly helped me at all. I basically had a painted block of wood onwheels wobbling its slow arse down the lane. Came back the next year and took home a bunch of ribbons because my dad helped the next year after watching me get my arse handed to m the year before.

I did this one year, basically stock block of wood, no modifications and spray painted. We immediately lost and went home.
I realize now that my Dad wasn’t interested in spending the whole Saturday up at the Pinewood Derby
