Tampa’s somewhat southern.

Pelly River Yukon hunting camp in 1987. Hunting guides told me they thought the Southern States of USA were amazing. No explanation from them of why.

Camp patriot Kuwait of course it was mine in purple and gold and the Mississippi state flag which I was asked to take down by some navy people. I did not take the state flag that my unit was out of down.

Wife is a Brit, the first time I visited her folks we had a backyard BBQ (in a tiny assed yard) on the 4th of July and her father had the Confederate Flag flying, when I attempted to tell him what it was he said I know.
I grew up in rural MS and that man was the most racist crusty old bastard I ever met despite growing and living his entire life in a lily white part of the UK.
He had a particular distaste for Pakistanis and Indians but no "coloreds" were exempt.

Whether or not you like it, the flag has been co-opted by extremist white supremacist groups. Obviously if I'm not in the south, I'm going to be more suspicious of people who fly it. Also, I've only ever seen a "white power" tattoo once in my life, and it was in that same part of the country.
It's no different than being suspicious of a group of young black men who are all wearing red bandannas. You would probably exercise caution. That's all I'm talking about when I say "high alert".

There is a bit of difference in a historical flag and bandannas that are meant to notify others of membership in a violent criminal gang.
I have never heard of gangs of Confederate Flag wearing thugs carjacking people.

Me either and I was never afraid of that happening. It's just a little strange to see Rebel flags in a state that wasn't part of the Confederacy. Add the fact that there was no southern warmth or charm, and the fact that I saw in person (for the first time in my life) a guy who is probably in the Aryan Brotherhood.
It just wasn't a welcoming feeling. That said, I didn't have any issues.
