Child of the 70's and 80's here. I've thought about this over the years and I sincerely believe it started with the isolation tech of decades ago. When we could stay in and watch betamax or VHS. When cable arrived and we had more than 4 channels (3,6,7,12). When we started to withdraw from neighbor to neighbor in-home barge ins to staying in to see what was on TV next. It evolved. Our nomadic entertainment was replaced with mindless entertainment and choice. The choice was a bad one.

The lack of education.
I am talking about as a whole. For example, there are a lot of people who go out and vote and don't have a clue about how government works and what candidate is really the one in their best interest, etc. There are too many naive people who just believes whatever they hear and make decisions based on that.
Not sure if this is the biggest, but it sure in the hell doesn't help.

a combination of judgment being "bad", the self-esteem movement, and nihilism.
everyone thinks they are great. do what ever makes you feel good. social standards are antiquated and meaningless. it might not be terrible for the individual, but it's devastating for society.

First 2 answers in this thread are what I would say. Lack of 2 parent homes and social media.
Two parent homes is self explanatory. Social media paved the way for those with the victim mentality to get their way and constant spreading of fake news
