4chan, 8chan, Crystal Cafe etc. used to be much worse circa 2007. Of course, the general population is just finding out about them now and it's the new boogeyman. That place has been scrubbed and is a G-rated version of its former self. It's also extremely popular with normal people who want to appear edgy; navigate to anything besides /pol/ or /b/ and there's plenty of typical internet traffic: sports, working out, guns, video games, porn.
By definition, biggest cesspool would have to be something with a lot of regular members. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Twitch, and of course Reddit all fit the bill.
As far as most shocking fringe group community? Probably some sick pedo or necrophilia forum we're not privy to. Stormfront maybe.
