They actually have Vaseline gauze... It prevents the dressing from sticking to the wound...
When I was a kid, a friends little brother wouldn’t wipe his arse. His mother had to put Vaseline on his raw butt for a barrier...
And you can use it on a prop shaft to keep the hub from locking to the shaft...

It's pretty commonly used to stop bleeding in sporting events. We use it to stop bleeding in rugby matches frequently. If you have to go out for blood, usually a busted forehead, wipe it off, slap some vaseline on it and get back in there.
