What is EBT? and How can I get it?

Stopped in the Dollar General to get a couple things didn't feel like overpaying at the grocery store for.
Paid w/ my debit card, the cashier hit EBT and more than $6 disappeared from my total. Tax would've only been $2.50. Does EBT lower the price on goods? It's basically food stamps right, but it can be used on different stuff than just food, correct?
I keep seeing threads and facebook posts about people stocking up on hundreds of dollars of food using EBT and having expensive clothing and cars...
Seems like it'd only be smart to try and take advantage of this cash cow.

yea man I've got like 4 EBT cards....just go to the government and pick one or 2 up! Its a great program. I have 2 govt iPhones also.

I'm guessing that the $6 that disappeared was things not covered by EBT.

I'm all for it. People on here love donating food to the church but hate donating money to government to fund this feeding the poor program. Really sad.
