I have the Paul Finebaum show on and they are talking about Tua's decision to go pro.. And there was just one caller who said.. I am paraphrasing, but "I think Tua is making a bad decision by going pro. He can stay an extra year, get his degree because you can't put a price on a good education".

But what is a good education? And is college the best place to get one? Of course this doesn't apply to those going to be a doctor, engineer, etc.. But in general, would you take experience over a degree?

And how many of you has a job that you learned how to do in college?

He'll make 10s of millions as soon as he signs a contract. He probably wouldn't make that in his lifetime with a degree from Alabama. He could always go back to school if the NFL doesn't work out.

Exactly. Sounds like the caller is the typical PF Show called and is a mouth-breathing redneck from bumfrick Alabama who never sniffed a college classroom.

Exactly. In fact, I think he is almost finished his degree. But yes, he will be making a lot more than 99% of the people currently enrolled at Alabama who will graduate.

"There's no price on a good education" is just some shite old ppl say.
I've got a good education in a high paying field. I'd trade it for NFL money in a heartbeat!

Yes.. But to be fair there have been one or two other people, that I have heard.. Who pretty much said the same as that guy. There are older people who think that way because a degree used to be a lot more valuable.. But it has never been = to $25M.

I believe the point in getting a good education is to land the best job possible.

His education was playing for the gumps for 3 years.

As your OP implies, it's based moreso on the individual and what their goals are.

A degree doesnt guarantee anything. It only makes you more eligible for certain jobs over others. Combined that with the sorting process most companies use, and you could argue it adds some marketable value.

You can get a good education from a library for free. The difference is you wont get the certification that comes with a degree (again based on professions)

Most jobs dont use even half of what you learned at college. I think he should go for the contract.

This.. This is what I was looking to hit on. You can learn for free. I understand a degree is a certificate that says you did take and pass the courses required for you to earn a degree, but you can argue that not everyone who finishes college has a quality education.. No matter where they went to school.

They could have half assed it, didn't really learn anything, they just did what they had to at the time to pass classes.

Tua got the best education in the world from his father.

He learned that winners have the express lane to life and it really hurts to be a frickup.

You don’t “get” an education in that it is not a passive process. Lots of people seem to miss this.

This is the difference between those that think having a 4-year degree means they are educated and those that look at education as a lifelong process. I know some with Ph.D.'s that are just plain morons outside of their narrow field of expertise, they have achieved the terminal level of formal education but I don't think of them as well educated by any means.

I agree with you. It seems a lot of well-educated people get lumped in with the “got mah edgacashun” crowd too often these days. The college boy hate is alive and well.
