For some reason it isn't well known, but in the '50s Chicago was an arts hub and was revolutionary in at least two areas:
- Music: Electric Blues
- Acting/Theatre: Improvisation. The Compass Theatre produced Mike Nichols and Elaine May as well as Shelley Berman. It evolved into Second City, which has produced just about every SNL member ever.
If you count improv's influence on comedy, you can make it three areas that Chicago was revolutionary.
I keep waiting for somebody to write a book about Fifties Chicago. It seems like a fascinating subject.

I’ll second some of the major things already mentioned: electric blues, improv comedy, deep dish pizza, Italian beef sandwiches.
Also, Chicago is a seminal place for architecture and engineering.
