I have no kids. Siblings are older than me so hopefully they die first.

Would very much not like it if the nieces got their hands on my estate but the nephews and great nephews? Might be okay.

However, I will be dead so I won't care.

Working on it. My great nephews will likely be my beneficiaries if there is any $ left. I am waiting on input from their father for things like trust fund until they reach a certain age...

State gets it I am told. That is why I did my will.

Eventually the state gets it, but I have no idea how that process works or how they determine a person doesn't have heirs.

There are services out there that search apparently.

I just got contacted by a lawyer for some distant relative (great grandma's niece, whatever that is to me) in MN who had no immediate family or will so her estate is now being distributed to all the family this company found. So by the time the lawyers run through it they said everyone gets like $100!

Just give it to them when you kick unless we're talking really big money. If you leave it to a trust for their eventual benefit, someone has to be trustee and manage the trust, and that someone (if a bank or trust company) will likely charge fees and expenses during the years it awaits distribution. If an individual relative is willing to be trustee, they may charge less or even zero, but it will be a PITA for them, opening accounts, filing tax returns, etc. until it pays out.

People often want some elaborate trust full of conditions (if he graduates college, then this; if he marries a Catholic, then that); half at 25 and the rest at 35, etc.). It's not worth all the hassle and expense unless you have a serious pile of dough at death.

The kids' parents can manage the trust if they want to go that route.

If I die tomorrow a 12 y.o. and a 10 y.o. shouldn't get $.

Here's a crazy story from New York state years ago- a guy died with a $40 million fortune and had no heirs. What they eventually did with it, I dunno. LINK

Found a pizzeria owner in New Hampshire who was a distant relative. Paparazzi harassed the guy so he went off the grid and donated it all to the UNCF.
