Never really sure what it was used for really either.

So the box didn’t smash down and steal your toppings

So the pizza doesn’t hit the top of the box

It was used to keep the box from touching the pizza. Haven't ordered a pizza in forever - didn't know they stopped using them

It was there so the box lid wouldn't smash the pizza.
They aren't used now because boxes are better.

It was used to keep the pizza box from touching the pizza and getting cheese stuck to it.
I think they have developed better pizza boxes, so they aren't needed anymore.

Mind blown. So box technology made it obsolete.

Too expensive to keep. Think they were used to keep the top of the pizza box from touching the pizza to avoid making the toppings and cheese stick to it?
I don't really know.

I'm assuming you mean the little disc in the middle that was there to keep the middle of the box from drooping down and sitting on the pizza, right?

I still see them quite a bit.

This is why the OT is so useful. Within 1 minute OP had 7-8 confirmed answers to his question
Also, you know, for wasting time at work..

It was a miniature Confederate Statue.

Cardboard technology has really improved since 2003.

Yall are all wrong. It was there so your action figures could have a little table to eat their pizza on.

I am so glad someone else here has some sense.
Without it, He-Man, Batman, and Captain Planet would've had to eat off the floor.

I am 30 years old and I learned something new today.
Today was a successful day.

So they are not an extra topping meant to be eaten?

I would also add, that the thing was for when they have multiple pizzas in the warm bag out for delivery stacked on top of each other. It prevented the weight of the boxes from collapsing on each other.
Just a space holder/filler if you will.
