Is it generational or some other variable at play here that’s caused such a dead zone in nightlife?

As a young guy, going out in BR was such fun as there were literally countless spots that were hopping so that we would often end up bar hopping all night.

Just take College and Perkins alone for example, you had Miami’s and the adjoining bar (the name of which escapes me at the moment) off Bennington. A little later on came Triple A. You had Southdowns, Peppy’s, another bar next to it where Bulldog is right now, and down the street you had the Caterie. There was also Glenn’s Bombay club.

You could take a drive off Florida and there was 2001, Happy Note, Texas Club, and Cowboys. Downtown, there was a 3 story bar in Catfish Town called Louie’s on the Levee, a prime stopping off point prior to venturing to the Kingfish.

Off Sherwood, you could hit up the Common Point (later to become Mike’s Bar and Grill), another bar next door, Ricky B’s for the older crowd, or you could hear live rock bands at The Sports Page, or venture to Tom Drive and hit up Pappa Joe’s.

Except for a few, most of these spots had big dance floors, and people were out in force. For its size, this city had a decent little night life, but today it seems to be all but dead in comparison, small dives and a few decent sized places with people drinking and perusing their cell phones, and almost no place outside maybe an LSU bar I can think of that has an actual dance floor of any significance.

Is it generational, technology, MADD, or some other variable I’m not thinking of?

Has to be. I’ve often wondered this myself. Aside from college bars for 18-23 year olds, there isn’t much to do in the city. I recall 15-20 years ago, there were way more places for people to go that weren’t college students.

Aside from Ringside at Sullivan’s, casino (Lauberge) and Cadillac Cafe, where do people between 35-50 hangout to listen to music and dance?

We had to go to bars to pick up women. I met my wife at Spanky's Daiquiris on Sherwood

At home. Avoid the chances of driving through a checkpoint.

You are hinting at your old age in this thread

Old enough to have witnessed the decay.

I honestly never thought about this being an effect of technology, but that very well may play a part in it. I used to frequent Texas Club, Mike’s, Rianos (next to Happy Noye), Caterie, the Bengal, etc. All of those places play a key part in my past.

I guess technology is keeping kids at home.

This is another topic, but I will say this. I’m starting to see a new girl and we spend a lot of time at home because she has a daughter and also we’re old now. (40-42) We have found that both of us tend to be on our phones way to much. If we’re not using them in front of each other, the second one of us walks out the room the other is on it, at which the other person sees them on it so jumped on theirs to check messages, Facebook, Togerdrippings, etc. We are both very guilty of it and last night we jokingly/non jokingly left our phones in the other room. It’s crazy how much this has infiltrated our lives.

The BR nightlife is still kicking, you just need to head on over to Bella Noche.

It really has, and even my generation. A few years back I got together with some friends who came into town for a HS reunion and we hadn’t seen each other in decades. It wasn’t long before people started pulling out their phones and checking FB or texting, and pretty soon I and another girl at the table were looking at each other like WTF? I couldn’t help but think how back in the day we would all be running our mouths and the noise at the table would be amped up as everyone was taking at a level to be heard. What a difference this stuff has played in our lives, some for the better, but I have to think a lot for the worse too.

For my group of friends..we went to Texas Club, Triple A, Poet's/Nightlife, Retroactive at The Varsity(do they even do those anymore?), Caterie, Southdowns, The Station, and America's Pub. This ranged from 1996-2004ish.

ETA: Forgot about Duvics...we sometimes went there as well

I'd be surprised if we haven't met. I think we are the same age roughly.
