When I was a young, I saw huge black bird flocks flying over my place of residence.

My house the past couple of days. Do you live in a rural area?

Government upgrades to new models that didnt need to be as numerous.
Think of it like only needing an iPhone to do the job of an old Commodore 64.

They all flew into the light of the dark black night.

I’ve wondered the same thing. In the 70’s I’d see huge long flocks of blackbirds flying over head frequently. I live fairly close to where I saw them then, and I never see them anymore.

Probably the same thing that has happened to the flocks of ducks that used to come down and we would have a great hunting season.

Used to clap really hard two or three times and they would immediately split into two groups, fly around me, then seamlessly rejoin.

The government killed a lot of them. Pesticides killed more. 78% decline in the population since 1970.

I hear ya, but don’t see them like I did back in the day.

Don’t feel bad. I used to have lots of hummingbirds, but they’ve been almost nonexistent since the summer we had the drought and record temps (‘23 maybe?).
They don’t show during the fall or spring migration. And I used to have a shitload of them.

With the invention of drones, the government no longer needs birds to spy on citizens, making many of the birds inoperable.

Are you referring to large groups of crows flying to and from their massive communal roosts? If so, in some regions American Crow populations were decimated by the West Nile Virus and are still recovering.

We use to call them “shite poppers “

They come through occasionally where I am, usually in Fall and Winter. They're mixed flocks with Blackbirds, Grackles, shitty European Starlings, Grey Catbirds, etc.

Grey catbird? You certain thats not brown headed cowbird? Blackbirds, grackles, Starlings and cowbirds all hang out together up here. With really large flocks sometimes its only blackbirds. Flock size has decreased 80% from old days.
