Many of you will downvote this post because you are ignorant, but here it is.
NOLA East, in the 70s, was, I am not making this up, very much like places like Katy and the Woodlands outside Houston. Tons of upper middle class housing and great schools. Tons of things to do. The Plaza was one of the most forward-thinking and nicest malls in the entire country. You could live the suburban life out there, yet, still live inside city limits. As they drained off more and more swamp, land was super cheap.
Then they started building Eastover. Eastover was built to be one of the most exclusive gated communities in the state. Plenty of doctors, engineers, and athletes built houses there.
Then, two things absolutely destroyed the East.
First was Challenger (the space shuttle) blowing up. The NASA plant in the East made the external fuel tanks for the shuttle. When the space program shut down for a couple of years, tons of people lost their jobs. Many of them lived in the east. A number of them caught on with other manufacturing places like Avondale, but they moved closer to their jobs.
Second was the oil bust. A lot of the downtown oil and gas engineers lived in the East, and the loss of jobs/consolidation led to a huge wave of foreclosures in the area.
Property values collapsed. Out of town landlords bought up property and made them Section 8 rentals. That led to crime and drugs developing in pockets of the east (not all of the east was full of crime and drugs, some parts were just poor). You had a mix of older poorer residents who refused to leave, and the crime element.
Katrina hits, the older people decided not to rebuild, and that was the kill shot.

Im not saying you're completely wrong.....but the oil bust was in 1985 and most of those downtown workers lived in Kenner and Metairie...that's where the schools and affordable house were...

Why would you start out so defensive, when you pretty much nailed all of the issues here? I would only quibble with your contention as to the "exclusivity" of Eastover, but other than that, it's a pretty great summary of things.

Wonder is your grandparents knew mine. They lived on Michigan too. Bootsie and Larry.
Antionette Frank buried her dad under the house two doors down. My grandpa’s dog discovered his bones. Good times.

TA: I jumped on google maps to check out grandma's old place. They turned that place into a shithole. Look at that garbage everywhere. Google Maps
No offense, but I don’t see garbage everywhere and their lawns look cut and edged..
I see some stuff stored under the carport..
ETA, there is a grill on the front lawn..

It was just too close to some really scary neighborhoods to ever succeed.
The advent of crack and $0.59 / gallon gasoline were the one-two combo that knocked New Orleans East out for good, but it was vulnerable from day one.
