Have you seen what's considered art these days? Says a bit about our own culture.

Because we lost slave labor. You can make all kinds of shite when you are paying 5 cents an hour and not worring about safety.

No ironworkers died building the Chrysler building in NYC in the 20s and workers made about 1.50 an hour

60 men died building the World Trade Center in 1970

With houses, people these days will pay more for square footage versus quality design and materials.

People don't care about quality anymore. It's reflected in every consumer item.

A lot of high quality consumer goods lasted a very long time, and that ended up putting companies out of business

What if people don't take as good care of their items because they don't cost as much?

Still plenty of good architecture out there. Just not in Louisiana.

Some of the stadiums they are building now are masterpieces and will stand the test of time. Just not much to be done with residential construction bc of the cost.

There are still some very interesting skylines and buildings going up across America

but developers 100 years ago didn't seem like they cared about using the cheapest materials possible, they wanted to make attractive structures that represented their city.

That's a huge false. Otherwise there would be zero refurbishments, rehabs, or tear downs/rebuilds. The things you see standing today 100 years old fall into 2 categories. The category of being well taken care of or the category in need of being taken care of. Go into any poorer urban area and you will see older homes and bldgs in disrepair.

Even this great bldg needed some TLC.

Where/why did our ideals shift with regard to architecture?

Like all things, it's market driven.
