re: What happened to Acura?

What’s happened to Honda? Reliability was always a given.
It's hard to put a finger on but it is corporatewide.
This is from 2017
quote:
“There’s no doubt we lost our mojo - our way as an engineering company that made Honda Honda.”
Chief Executive Takahiro Hachigo
In interviews, more than 20 current and former Honda executives and engineers at the company’s facilities in Japan, China and the United States recounted the missteps that they say contributed to Honda’s decline as an innovator. They also revealed new details of the firm’s efforts to rediscover its creative spark.
They said Honda had become trapped by Japan’s “monozukuri” (literally, “making things”) approach to manufacturing. This culture of incremental improvement and production line efficiency, called “kaizen”, served the company well in the decades after World War Two, they said, but today’s challenges – electrification, computerization, self-driving cars – demand a more nimble and flexible approach.
Most importantly, they said, over the past two decades company executives in Tokyo were given too much control over research and development. In their view, this led to shareholder value being prioritized over innovation. There was a reluctance to draw on talent from outside Japan. In its quest to deliver for shareholders, Honda sought to maximize volume and profit and match the product range of its main Japanese rival, Toyota.
“The upshot was, as we obsessed about Toyota and beating it in the marketplace, we started to look like Toyota. We started to forget why we existed as a company to begin with,” Honda R&D President and CEO Yoshiyuki Matsumoto told Reuters.
Honda’s revenues have grown strongly since 2000 and its operating margin stood at 6.0 percent in the financial year ended March 31, 2017, compared with 7.2 percent at Toyota. But Honda’s cars have slipped down quality rankings, from seventh in market research firm J.D. Power’s initial quality study in 2000 to 20th in 2017.
This is a Reuters link but this info was widely disseminated at the time.

Timely thread, as I just finished car shopping for my wife. We passed on Acura and Infiniti for Kia Telluride.
There was no way we could justify the Infiniti. Essentially a nice Nissan Pathfinder with dated styling and infotainment system.

Google “Acura seats peeling” and look at the pics.
I'm guessing you could do that with any brand.

Maybe but Acura has had this issue fo eva. The vinyl they use on the seats is particularly bad. The leather parts are thin but usually hold up long after the vinyl craps the bed.
I may sound like a Honda/Acura hater in the thread but it is really the opposite, I recommended them forever with a shortlist of caveats but now I don't even mention them to friends and family.

What do you recommend instead?

The CVT is killing Infiniti.
Q50 has a 7 speed auto.
Q60 has a 7 speed auto.
QX30 has a 7 speed auto.

QX80 has a 7 speed auto.
Looks like just the glorified minivan has the cvt.

To people that "just want a good car" it is Lexus, Toyota or Mazda that covers the vast majority of car buyers that solicit my advice. Anything outside of that needs a deeper discussion.
Most people kinda know what they want and a lot of them don't care much about reliability even if they say they do. A big contingent of buyers buy based on looks, infotainment, performance or so combination of those. To be honest if you only keep a car/truck for 3-5 years and don't pile on the miles reliability shouldn't be a huge part of the equation except as it impacts resale.

I have a 10 year ownership cycle. That's why I drive a RAM

Are mazda and subaru still actually made in japan?

North American Mazda models are built in a variety of locations both in Japan and America. At the present, Mazda operates three manufacturing facilities in Japan, with two located in Hiroshima, Japan, and another in Hofu, Japan. In addition to their Japanese manufacturing facilities, several North American models are produced in varying quantities at the Auto Alliance international facility located in Flat Rock, Michigan, and the Kansas city assembly plant in Claycomo, Missouri.
Subarus are made at two manufacturing plants. One plant is located in Gunma, Japan, and the other is in Lafayette, Indiana.

wouldn’t touch anything from Infiniti with those trash transmissions.

Which honda engines had oil consumption issues?
I have not heard this.
The 2007-2010 Accord 4 cyl had issues with the rings. It was a known defect but Honda tried to be difficult about it. The girl I was dating had one and she took it in to get the oil change and they told her it was low. Then next time, same thing. I started monitoring it and it was getting worse quickly. We took it to Team Honda and they made up some bullshite, but Googling led me me to a known issue. We went back and they fixed it for $600, which after further pursuit of the issue directly with Honda, they eventually refunded.

I rode in a new NSX. Interesting car. Fast in a straight line, comfortable, and lots of tech. Lower optioned car were listed new for $130k. That’s a ton of car for that price range.
The experience is kind of blah though. The car always felt in control and within it’s own limits.
I bet you can get a low mileage NSX for less than a low mileage ITR

But I'm considering another MDX but the Sport Hybrid this time.
I have the mdx sport hybrid and I love it. I get 29 mpg (calculated at the pump not from the computer). It’s a great cruiser but it moves when you get on it. The dual clutch transmission and adaptive suspension transform the vehicle. The rear electric motors and the V6 give it plenty of power. It handles very well too. I can’t wait to put some summer tires on it- then it will really stick.
Those type of cars prove Acura can still make great vehicles, sadly they only make 1800 mdx sport hybrids a year and never advertise it.

In SC we have a 991.1 Turbo S and a F80 M3, in LA we have a E46 M3. We have a Lexus ES and GX that go back and forth.

You would/do hate the modern 911 then. The front end doesn't even go light at 150+ like they used to. They are more sanitized than the NSX but you can cut the electronic nannies off then both can be a handful.

Yes, I had 2 Acura TLs & tranny went out on both. They replaced them bc of the recall but one of them went out again 13 mths later. They wouldn't replace it bc they said the warranty expired at 12,000 miles/1 yr.
Bought the Infiniti M35 & just rolled to 300,000 miles.
