Agreed. I think it would be unthinkable for many parents today to have your 10-11 year old gone all day on a bike and you didn't know where he was or have any way to get in touch with him. That was my childhood.

Exactly. But there were levels of trust and self-management I am not sure kids could pull off today.

Plus, neighborhoods had stability, not a lot of transitional people. Everyone watched out for the kids.

They sure knew how to call my mom when I wasnt acting right.

Playboys stashed in the woods

There was a storm/bomb shelter in a field, thats where all the good stuff was hidden by teens, which we would find.

Wow! This thread is amazing and sad.
Everything has been listed.

My family had a motorhome and we went so many places in that thing.
California to good Ole Mississippi. A lot of camp grounds. We would go to one in Picayune, Ms the most. We had some sort of membership. It had a huge water slide. Swimming all day and riding bikes.
I notice kids driving golf carts instead of riding bikes these days.

Yep. It was unusual when one of our buddies moved away. Most people raised their kids in the neighborhood their entire childhood and we all knew each other because we were always outside.

I grew up in a suburban, middle class neighborhood with about 250 houses or so. Probably half of the neighborhood was young families with kids and we had woods, creeks, ball fields all a short bike ride away.

Damn. That's terrible. But makes me feel better about my kids so I'll take it.

And feel icky.

Did something bad happen to the boy to make the dad over-protective?

It might explain your friend's parenting behavior.

The freedom that no cell phones brings

Or the ability to cope socially especially on the dating scene. Now they all use dating apps and can track each others every move.

You learn necessary skills by having to approach a woman and ask her out. Both how to do it and also how to handle rejection. You also had to learn trust without cell phones, you set a time and date to be somewhere and trusted the other person to be there. Once you left the house you had to no way to contact to ensure they were on the way or still coming.

Man that sounds so cool I’d even bake some damn apple pies to serve there, and I’ve never baked an apple pie in my life.

Saw pictures of kids at my high school in my 1981 yearbook playing paintball.
