In some places, teachers start near 30K. I know the argument will be that they get summers off and get to sleep with the students, but aren't their contributions to society greater than those flipping burgers for a living? $15 an hour x 40 hrs x 50 weeks = $30K.

About $100k annual take home for my household. And that's only house, car and credit card.

We live a pretty blessed and (white) privileged life, though, so I would say about 1/3 of that is the answer for a family.

Here is a living wage calculator for baton rouge

10.35 and hr....not that much. You can go to the home page of that link and read their definition. But basically it considers minimal food, transportation and housing costs for a particular city and if you have children to support.

At least $100k for a family if you want to live decently (by my own standards).

It's the tan.

I look middle eastern with the beard I'm rocking right now. Inconvenient for my frequent flyer job, to say the least

That's actually pretty close to the true price of those items.

Bread is subsidized by corporate welfare for farmers and wheat production.

Dairy farmers are even bigger welfare queens.

And the oil and gas companies get a shite ton of tax breaks.

I wish they were that expensive. The roads and grocery would be so much quieter.

As a single guy I calculated a $50,000 salary would be more than enough to live comfortably in the South with a nice apartment, new car, ect. But hopefully with my degree I'll make 2-3 times that lol

I make roughly $40k/year and I have a very comfortable lifestyle, granted I am single with no kids

Or a second job with 2, 8hr shifts per week.

I've always been confused with why working more than 40 hours a week isn't considered a valid solution.

Burger flippers don't get $15 an hour and teachers don't work more than 40 weeks a year so your math is flawed but yes teachers are worth more

Yes burger flippers currently do not get $15 an hour, but that is what they're demanding the worth of their "skill set" be arbitrarily set at with a minimum wage hike. Therefore a full time fast food worker would be valued as much as someone in charge of teaching children to read or preparing teenagers for college for an entire school year. Seems ridiculous. I am not a teacher, just using them as an example.

Yes we do

You damn right we do.

get to sleep with the students

Only the perverted ones.

I'd hope so, but I teach a computer class. I can't say that I make a huge contribution.

FWIW. I used to teach math (Geometry and Algebra 2) but I was offered an easier class with the same pay.

I don't know what it means in political terms - seems just a phrase to polarize.

But IMO I prefer people to work - and a full time worker should be able to pay his family basic needs w/o govt assistance.

Anyone without kids has no idea what a living wage could even mean.

If I was single, I could live on 20k lmao. I make ~100k, wife and kids are FN expensive.

No, I'm sorry, but these people don't want to work. It is a culture thing. Like I said, if they can make in one day what it now takes them 3 days, they will just work one day, and continue to receive government hand outs. It won't change anything.

Managers of these restaurants easily make that. If they want $15/hr, work harder. I guarantee you most of these places struggle to find good help. They would be willing to pay someone that much if they were actually worth it.

The problem is a lot of these people become parents at a young age, out of wedlock and without a hs education. It just all goes down hill from there. But that was their choice. To be reckless.

I'm not gong to say this is the dumbest thing I've ever read, but I will say it definitely ranks in the top 5.

And that's exactly what I do. It's not my fault you chose to have kids.

A living wage, is that amount of money, that if given to all the low-life motherfrickers asking for it, would decrease the value of the dollar by about 60% or more, would temporarily make other people doing OK poor, then once the economy adjusted, those people would be back in the same situation they were in before, and again protesting/begging/etc for the "right" to a living wage.

These fricking idiots don't understand that money isn't just arbitrarily distributed and that in order to make more, you need to do/be more.

If the wealthiest people in the world would give all of their money to the poorest, in 5 years the previous wealthy people would be wealthy again, and the poor would be poor again.
