What encourages people to become cops in shithole cities?

Don't get me wrong, I have endless admiration for cops, but I just cannot fathom why anyone would desire to be an inner city babysitter in places like New Orleans, Oakland, Houston, etc.

Not only is it incredibly dangerous, but you're essentially a human barrier corralling the hood to their shithole and keeping them away from productive citizens. They never seem to have a shortage of applicants, though.

Some people want to work where they are needed the most I would imagine.

Also, your cush cop jobs in towns with no/low crime are not something you easily get. Usually have to have connections to get those type of gigs.

Power trip with no accountability. Endless opportunities for "extra" income.

Some people believe they are making a difference and others like to be in control

Some want to help the community. Or it could be that they come from generations of cops. Or some people just needed a job. All admirable qualities.

Some people were bullied and pushed around. It's an easy way to have some power I suppose.

Post-Military employment for many who love the adrenaline rush of catching bad guys.

opportunities and decent pay for low education applicants

and getting on with the desired cities is very competitive

I have a good friend who tried to get on in Austin and he said the app process was insane

Have you ever talked to him about it? Is it really like a warzone like it seems?
