My ex-wife was/is like this (no pics). It didn't really come out until we had been married for about 3 years. We dated for 4 years before we got married. She thought that every guy was chasing her. She has a phd and is a super nerd.

My advice is he just acknowledge her feelings such as; Yes I can see you're angry; sad; hurt; whatever. This is a way of getting her to own her feelings. Make sure he understands that he is not responsible for whatever her feelings are.
If she tries to blame him for her feelings, he should tell her "I can see you need distance" and move away from her.

Son needs to run. No matter how good she is or how good looking, there is a scale for a reason. He is reaching the tipping point and it's time to cut ties and move on. Life is too short to be 'someone's problem' or at least who they attribute to be their problem because they refuse to acknowledge responsibility for their own emotions.
