What does being a father mean to you?

Another thread got me thinking about this quote from breaking bad.
It really stuck with me. Especially through the hard times. Because being a father is a thankless job, often. It’s sweat and blood and silent tears.
But when I see my offspring grow and learn. When I see them with a thirst to consume knowledge, it tells me I’ve done something right. When they are excited to grow our food. When they want to help me cook. When they are good guests and thank our hosts for their hospitality. When they offer our guests hospitality in return.
I know i’m doing something right.
And when my day has been long and hard, when i’m covered in sweat and dirt and my baby girl gives me a hug and takes my boots off. That’s all the thanks I need. When my boy wants to work in the garden with me. That’s my reward.
Being a father has given me more joy (and frustration) than anything else in this life. Without them i’m Empty. Even with this halfway life with them I have it makes the moments even more sweet.
And it baffles me how men can abandon their children.
Because as a father they should be our driving purpose. The reason for the long hours and the aching bones. The provider, the oak that weathers the storm and provides shelter. The comfort in the times their spirit is broken.
It is what we are.

That for the rest of my life, people will depend on my time and money and will in turn blame me for their problems.

I'm not one, but I immediately think of my dad. He's the best example of one that I've ever known. If I had to sum it up in one word, it would be "sacrifice."

Being a father is a responsibility, a privilege, and a joy. In that order.

I think the OT can handle it. You’ll have some “your mom” jokes and some bullshite. Some good memes. Some butthurt.
But sifting through the detritus I think you’ll find some gems.
Much like being a father. It’s a whole lot of bullshite. But there are those moments when the “I love you daddy”s just make it all worth it.

But they’ll depend on you. Meaning you have purpose. They want your time, meaning it is valuable to them. And if they blame you, it means you had an impact.
You can resent it, or you bear The burden proudly.

I'm enjoying the last few years of my daughter still being a little girl. Pretty soon it's on to the teens and all of that shite

Doing everything possible to not raise a daughter that hangs out on sand bars in Pearl River, throws bottles in the river, gets called out for it, and then thinks it’s alright to whack the person calling you out with a bottle and killing him.
Somewhere along the way, if this happens you failed as a father.
